Of course, it should be noted that the more times you throw a Magikarp back, the more expensive that option will become. Because of this, throwing Magikarp back may not be something you can do until you’ve built up a substantial amount of Diamonds in the game.

How to Get the Best Magikarp

The first key to getting a good Magikarp is to pay attention to the Magikarp’s design, or pattern. This pattern will determine whether it’s something you can collect, or if it is one you already have. Ideally, you should always try to get a Magikarp with a different or new pattern that you don’t already have collected.

While the pattern is purely cosmetic, you are awarded for discovering and capturing more and more patterns. This can lead to more Diamonds, Coins, or even quest completions that could reward you with other items.

The most important thing to pay attention to when getting a new Magikarp is how “individual” it is. This is determined by the Pokemon’s various stats, which can sometimes offer you various bonuses. Thankfully when fishing for new Magikarp, your friend Rod will often make little comments about the Magikarp, and how individual it is. You’ll want a Magikarp that’s really special, as that will often give you bonuses like increased JP per training session, increase JP from eating, and even increased coins from winning league matches.

If you’re not happy with a Magikarp and its individual stats, throw it back. As we stated above, this will cost you a little bit, but it is definitely worth the investment if you want a Magikarp that is going to take you through an entire league without running into any kind of trouble.
