Is Mutt Worth Saving in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? – Answered

The best boy in Bohemia.

Mutt, your loyal canine companion, is tragically separated from you during the early hours of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. After a few key story events, players can search for Mutt and rescue him as part of a side quest, allowing him to rejoin Henry’s side as man’s best friend.

The side quest to reunite Henry and Mutt is fairly long, making it understandable to wonder if saving the poor pupper is worth the trouble. Here’s everything you need to know about Mutt and his utility in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Should You Find and Save Mutt in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2?

Yes, we think that finding and saving Mutt is absolutely worth it in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Not only does it make sense for Henry’s character from a narrative point of view, but Mutt offers plenty of utility to players throughout their adventures across Bohemia.

Here are some of the reasons you’d want Mutt by your side.

All Bark, All Bite

Mutt doesn’t just feast on sausages and smoked mutton, but he’ll assist you during combat encounters. He’ll distract enemies, bite their legs and arms to throw off their balance, and take a few hits in your honor. Having a companion in fights reduces the difficulty significantly as you can manage individual enemies easily.

You can also initiate fights using Mutt by commanding him to “Sic” enemies. Just ensure he doesn’t get hit too often as that’ll decrease his obedience. Even if you’re attacking innocent Villagers, Mutt won’t hesitate and become your partner in crime, as Anubis intended.

A Loyal Distraction

You can teach Mutt to Bark, which is especially useful if you plan on sneaking around.

If you command Mutt to Bark, he’ll sit in a spot and Bark his lungs out, distracting everyone in his vicinity, while you sneak into a house to steal vegetables and dried herbs.

Master and His Hound

With the Hellhound Perk, you’ll appear more threatening as a group whenever you have Mutt with you. Whether it’s an intimidation check or Bandits making a fuss, you’ll appear tougher overall.

Some enemies will surrender more easily or even flee, but regardless, they’ll struggle against you and Mutt thanks to his combat abilities. Additionally, you can earn Charisma points just by having Mutt with you after unlocking a specific Perk.

On the Hunt

Mutt can help Henry hunt by spotting game, but he’s also very useful in specific quests where you need to find a person or item. For instance, during a certain side quest, you’ll have to locate a character in the woods. If you have their scarf, Mutt can catch the scent and lead you to them by tracking their location. This saves a lot of hassle compared to searching aimlessly within the marked area.

Traveling Alone is No Fun

Lastly, on a more personal note, you’ll be traveling alone for a good chunk of the game, and it can get a bit lonely. While the game does a great job of adding random events during your journey, having a companion makes exploration even more engaging.

Best Perks for Mutt

Mutt has a dedicated Perks section in Skills called “Houndmaster“, and if you’re planning on keeping him around, almost all of these are useful. Early on, however, we recommend prioritizing the following:

PerkPerk Benefit
HellhoundIf you have your dog with you, you will appear more threatening and tough to others. This will show in the Prescene and Intimation skill checks, but also in combat, as enemies are more likely to give up or run away. And if they don’t, they’ll have a harder time fighting you.
Charming CompanionWhen you have your dog with you, your Charisma is increased by 3.
Heightened ScentMutt can sniff out enemies and other potential trouble at a much greater distance. This makes it easier to spot and avoid an ambush or other events during fast travel.
BarkMutt can sit at a spot and start barking, giving you the chance to sneak around unnoticed.
Dog’s Best FriendStrange dogs won’t react to you by barking, just growling.

How To Raise Mutt’s Obedience

Mutt’s obedience directly impacts his performance, and thus his overall utility. If you aren’t taking care of him, which isn’t that difficult, he’ll run off, and disobey you frequently. Here are a few things you can do to increase his obedience:

  • Feed him from to time. Mutt will never say no to a nice chunk of meat, and it’s the easiest way to increase his obedience.
  • Like any good dog owner, praise Mutt whenever you get the chance. He’s a good boy, and a good boy deserves all the love he can get.
  • Learn the Faithful Companion Perk, which reduces the rate at which Mutt’s obedience decreases by 25%.

You can check Mutt’s current obedience in the Sidekicks menu under Dog. The maximum obedience value is 100.

Overall, Mutt is an invaluable companion who is worth the bit of trouble during his lengthy side quest. It makes sense to have him with you mechanically, and narratively. Speaking of companions, make sure to get your other dear animal friend Pebbles the Horse back for free.
