How to Transfer Data from a PS4 to PS4 Pro

Just picked up a PS4 Pro but don’t feel like re-downloading all of your games? Let us help.

PlayStation 4 Pro is the newest console from Sony, and if you want to enjoy the enhanced graphics on the PS4 Pro supported games, then you’ll need to pick up the console. Don’t worry, though. You don’t have to re-download all those games and applications. In fact, we’re going to show you how to easily transfer your data from your old PlayStation 4 to your shiny new PlayStation 4 Pro.

What you Need to Make the Transfer

Before you get started, there are a few things that you’ll need in order to complete this transfer. We included a full list of the items below.

  • Broadband network access
  • A LAN Cable
  • A PlayStation 4
  • A PlayStation 4 Pro

Alternatively, this process can also be used to transfer data from your old PlayStation 4 to a new PlayStation 4, in case you decided to simply upgrade to one of the PS4s with more storage space.

Now that you have everything to begin this process, let’s get started.

Check Your System Version

Before you can transfer data, you’re going to need to make sure you have the right software version to complete the task. If you play online games with your PlayStation 4, then you should already be updated, but we’ll run a quick check to verify. On both consoles, head over to the Settings application. Once it launches, scroll down and select System Software Update. This will check for any new system software updates. After the check has completed and any new software has been installed, it is time to move on to the next step.

Connect to the Internet and Sign in to PSN

With all the software up to date, it’s time to make sure both consoles are connected to the Internet. You can do this from the settings menu. Look for Network, then choose Setup Internet Connection or Test Internet Connection. You should technically be connected to the Internet, especially if you recently updated your software. With Internet connection applied, it is now time to dive in and make sure you have all of your data ready to transfer.

Prepare Your Data for Transfer

Once you connect to the Internet, the PlayStation 4 Pro should automatically detect that you’re using a new console with your PSN ID, and you’ll get a screen asking if you’d like to transfer data from your old console to the new one. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the process, then reach over and hold down the Power Button on your original PlayStation 4 until you hear a beep. This will prepare your data for transfer.

Connect the Consoles via LAN Cable

Now you need to connect the consoles so that you can transfer the data and move it all over to your PlayStation 4 Pro. Don’t worry, though. This won’t delete the data off the old console, so if something doesn’t go right, you can always begin the process again. If for some reason you aren’t able to connect the two consoles together with a LAN cable, you can connect each console to your router with its own LAN cable. This will still allow the transfer to take place.

Pick and Choose the Data You Want

The next step is to select the data that you want to transfer. This is broken down into five different sections:

  • Applications
  • Saved Data
  • Captures
  • Themes
  • Settings

You can also dive deeper into the Applications section and pick and choose which games you want to move over, or just batch move them all. Either way, make your choice and then press the next button. Anything not check marked will not be transferred, so remember to check everything you want to move over.

Activate the PS4 Pro as Your Primary PS4

Finally, after the transfer has completed, you’ll be asked to activate the new PlayStation 4 Pro as your Primary PS4. This allows you to set it up as your main device, allowing you to receive updates as well as upload any save data to the PS Plus Cloud.

Now that you completed the transfer process, you can wipe your old PlayStation 4, or just leave it the way it is if you intend to keep it. If you already got rid of your old PlayStation 4, then just choose to cancel the transfer process when prompted. You can also do this if you’d prefer to start off with a clean slate. It should also be mentioned that passwords, Profile Data of any user accounts not signed in with a PSN ID and any un-synched trophy data won’t be transferred to the new console.
