How to Tame Pets in Enshrouded

Put the cat back in the bag!

Let’s be honest: everyone loves being able to pet cats in any game, and now Enshrouded can be added to the ever-growing list of games that feature pettable cats. It’s not just cats that you can pet in Enshrouded, either. You can tame any animal that isn’t out to kill you in the game. That includes goats, the adorable fae deer that frolic around the forest, rabbits, goats, and more. However, these animals are a little skittish, so you must be careful when taming them.

Taming an animal in Enshrouded isn’t as easy as approaching it and shoving it in your bag. First of all, that would be rude. Second, the animal will run away before you can catch it. To tame an animal, you must distract it with food and pat it three times to earn three friendship hearts. Once you have three friendship hearts, you will be free to shove them in your bag, but not before.

How to Make Animal Food in Enshrouded

Food is the most important part of the animal-taming process. Without it, you have no distraction, and there will be no way to sneak up on your furry friend without them noticing. Animal food can be crafted by the Farmer using a variety of ingredients related to the animal you want to tame.

A cat isn’t going to eat the same meal as a goat, so you have to craft food specifically for the animal you are trying to tame. Here is all the animal food you can create in Enshrouded and how to make it:

Once you have your food in hand, you are ready to track down your critter.

How to Tame An Animal in Enshrouded

Sneak up on your future pet slowly and carefully. Don’t get too close, though, or you might spook it. You just need to get within throwing distance, preferably from behind the animal. Throw a piece of food near the animal and wait for it to start eating.

As long as there is no yellow question mark above the animal’s head, you are free to slowly approach the critter until you can pat it. After one pat, back off and repeat the process again. You need to pat the animal three times to fully tame it.

If the animal ever gets a yellow question mark above its head, back off right away. If the question mark hovers above the animal’s head for too long, it will turn into a red exclamation mark, and the animal will run away, resetting your taming. If you already gave it two bits of food before it ran away, that progress will be lost, and you will have to start again.

Thankfully, each time you craft animal food, you get ten pieces, so you have a little room for error when you’re taming.

Once the animal is fully tamed, place it in your inventory so you can take it back to your base, where it can begin its new life on your farm! Don’t forget to build yourself a nice little paddock for your animals. You don’t want them running away on you.
