How to See All Endings in Somerville – Explained

How will you choose to end the alien invasion in Somerville?

Somerville is the new adventure game and debut effort from Jumpship, a budding studio created by the co-founder of Playdead, Dino Patti available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. While the game was initially viewed as somewhat of a spiritual successor to previous Playdead titles LIMBO and INSIDE, through its environmental, science fiction storytelling, and ambiguous characters, Somerville is actually quite a departure due to its 3D movement capabilities and lesser overall challenge.

Despite its differences, one gameplay facet similar to Playdead’s acclaimed puzzle platformer, INSIDE is that multiple endings can be achieved in Somerville. In fact, there are five possible endings that can be found in the four to six hour long post-apocalyptic alien invasion story, including five achievements for discovering each of the corresponding endings. This guide will demonstrate how to find all of Somerville’s conclusions, which can be easily accessed via chapter select after you’ve already completed the game.

Somerville Ending One – Resignation

The Resignation ending is the only ending that can occur outside of the very end of the game, and is found in Chapter 13.

During the third section of Chapter 13, after obtaining the flare, you will encounter an illusion of the mother and son sitting on a couch just like at the very beginning of Somerville. You are supposed to use the blue alien powers (left trigger) to dispel the illusion to progress forward, but if you instead opt join them for some family time on the couch, the screen will slowly fade to black, revealing the “Resignation” ending.

After a short cutscene, you will be brought back to the previous checkpoint before you obtained the flare, and receive the Resignation achievement. This section has been known to be a bit buggy though, as I personally experienced my character stuck floating in the air on my first attempt, requiring a reload of the checkpoint.

Somerville Ending Two – Resignation Reprise

Chapter 14 is the grand finale of the game, featuring an attempt to communicate with three giant alien monoliths through holding the “A” button to link hands with with the other people standing beside your character, while using either your left trigger (LT) for blue, right trigger (RT) for red, and both triggers together (LT&RT) for purple. You can find the most common ending entitled, “Resignation Reprise” during this section.

The communication will start when the alien monoliths demonstrate a Blue, Red, Blue pattern. You should respond in kind repeating the message with a Blue (LT), Red (RT), and Blue (LT). Then the aliens will counter with Blue, Blue, Red, which you should also mimic by choosing Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Red (RT). The monoliths will then repeat the second pattern twice more, which you should once again match two more times by selecting Blue (LT), Blue (LT), and Red (RT).

Following this pattern will reveal the family’s house behind a crooked rock walkway, simply follow the path forward and enter the house to witness the ending. You will receive the Resignation Reprise achievement and the credits will roll.

Somerville Ending Three – Family First

Chapter 14 is the grand finale of the game, featuring an attempt to communicate with three giant alien monoliths through holding the “A” button to link hands with with the other people standing beside you, while using either the left trigger (LT) for blue, right trigger (RT) for red, and both triggers together for purple. You can find the “Family First” ending during this section

The communication will start when the alien monoliths demonstrate a Blue, Red, Blue pattern. You should respond in kind repeating with a Blue (LT), Red (RT), and Blue (LT). Then the aliens will counter with Blue, Blue, Red. To achieve the Family First ending, you should instead reply with Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Blue (LT). This will reveal the mother and son walking in a black abyss trapped inside a sphere.

Follow the rocky pathway up to the sphere, you will see a glowing blue circular light next to the alien object that is trapping the wife and son, interact with it using the “A” button then the left trigger. Shortly after, you will see a red circular light, interact with it using the “A” button then the right trigger. Finally, you will see a purple circular light, once again, press the “A” button and hold both triggers at the same time. By doing this you will reveal the third ending, and you receive the “Family First” achievement for your efforts.

Somerville Ending Four – War of the Worlds

Chapter 14 is the grand finale of the game, featuring an attempt to communicate with three giant alien monoliths through holding the “A” button to link hands with with the other people standing beside you, while using either your left trigger (LT) for blue, right trigger (RT) for red, and both triggers together for purple. You can find the “War of the Worlds” ending during this section

War of the Worlds is the quickest ending, as when the alien monoliths begin communication by demonstrating a Blue, Red, Blue Pattern, simply choose purple by hold both triggers (LT&RT), until the world explodes. You will receive the “War of the Worlds” achievement for “choosing the path of violence.”

Somerville Ending Five – Understanding

Chapter 14 is the grand finale of the game, featuring an attempt to communicate with three giant alien monoliths through using your left trigger (LT) for blue, right trigger (RT) for red, and both triggers together for purple. You can find the “Understanding” ending during this section.

The Understanding ending provides the ending for the family’s story, and is quite difficult to decipher without a guide. It requires specific, complex dialogue with the aliens, which is as follows:

The communication will start when the alien monoliths demonstrate a Blue, Red, Blue pattern. You should respond in kind repeating with a Blue (LT), Red (RT), and Blue (LT).

Then the aliens will respond with Blue, Blue, Red. You must then follow up with Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Purple (LT&RT), Purple (LT&RT), Purple (LT&RT).

The aliens will reply with Blue, Blue, Blue, Blue, followed by Purple, Purple. In turn, you must respond by choosing: Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Red (RT), Purple (LT&RT), Purple (LT&RT).

Finally, the aliens will conclude their end of the conversation with Purple, Purple, Purple, Red, Purple, Purple, Red, Red, Red. Your final reply must be: Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Blue (LT), Red (RT), Purple (LT&RT), Purple (LT&RT), Red (RT), Red (RT), Red (RT).

You will know you followed the correct sequence when the three alien monoliths disintegrate, and the father player character will be standing across from his family, beckoning from a the distance. After witnessing the Understanding ending, you will receive the achievement of the same name, and be one of the few to have witnessed each of the five Somerville endings. Congratulations!
