How to Save Gandrel in Baldur’s Gate 3

In Act 1, as you explore the wilds of Faerun, there’s a good chance you’ll run to Gandrel south of the Riverside Teahouse. But if you speak to him, there’s a pretty decent chance he winds up dead, at least if Astarion is in your party. Fortunately, there are a few ways to stop Gandrel from dying.

1) Don’t have Astarion in your party

Gandrel dies because Astarion kills him. Thus, the best way to avoid this fate is to not have Astarion in your party. When Astarion is missing, Gandrel will be evasive about what he’s hunting. This is to keep you out of danger. You’ll have to pass a persuasion check to learn that he’s hunting a particular vampire spawn.

2) Hand over Astarion

If you have Astarion in your party, and you know Astarion’s true nature, you can opt to give him to Gandrel. If you do this, Gandrel will heft Astarion over his shoulder and simply leave with him. This will permanently remove Astarion from your party. And while we can’t really speak to the ultimate fate of Astarion if you opt to do this, we can surmise it’s nothing good.

But, on a positive note, Gandrel survives.

3) Leave the conversation

If you’re speaking to Gandrel and Astarion is in your party, simply end the conversation as quickly as possible. If you don’t, Astarion will take matters into his own hands and kill Gandrel. Once the conversation ends, simply walk away from Gandrel and let him live in peace.

If you’ve successfully saved Gandrel from Astarion, you’ll even be able to encounter him again at a Gur camp much later in the game.
