How To Reduce Blur in Planet Coaster 2 on PC

Blur begone!

Planet Coaster 2 is Frontier Developments’ second major entry in the management simulation series and builds upon the original in multiple ways. The PC version has plenty of settings to tweak and runs well for the most part, but there are a few visual issues that can be a bit distracting, especially in terms of visibility. Here is how you can reduce the blur in Planet Coaster 2, and get a sharper image.

Reduce Blur in Planet Coaster 2

By default, Planet Coaster 2 has multiple post-processing settings enabled that directly impact the game’s visuals. In addition, the in-game resolution may not be set correctly upon initial launch. Here are our suggestions to improve the overall image quality, and reduce the blur significantly.

Check Your In-Game Resolution

Multiple users have reported that Planet Coaster 2 doesn’t launch with the correct resolution and the game defaults to a much lower value than your desktop resolution. This can lead to a pixelated, and blurry image. If you haven’t checked your settings by now, make sure that the correct resolution is selected in Display Settings.

After selecting the correct resolution, the game should be rendered as it should.

Disable Motion Blur and Depth of Field

Both motion blur and depth of field are enabled by default in Planet Coaster 2, which contributes to the blurry, and unstable image. Thankfully, both of these can be disabled from the in-game settings.

  • In Display Settings, scroll to the bottom
  • You’ll see both “Motion Blur” and “Depth of Field” under Post Processing
  • Set both of these to Off

Ideally, the implementation shouldn’t be so aggressive, but for some reason, both of these have a fairly large impact. We hope that the developers add intensity sliders in an update to make it more bearable, because contextual motion blur can be quite useful.

Disable Chromatic Aberration in Planet Coaster 2

While motion blur and depth of field can be disabled in-game, chromatic aberration doesn’t have a toggle. It’s enabled on an engine level, but we can thankfully edit the configuration file to disable the effect, significantly improve the image quality, and remove the blur, and distortion effect caused by it.

  • First, head over to the following location:
C:\Users\[WINDOWS USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Planet Coaster 2\Config_Local
  • Here, open the Graphics.config.xml file using a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++
  • Locate the following value. You can hit Ctrl + F, and search for the exact placement in the file as well.
<ChromaticAberration>1</ChromaticAberration>
  • Change the value from 1 to 0, and it should look like this instead:
<ChromaticAberration>0</ChromaticAberration>
  • Save the file (Ctrl + S), and exit out

Try Something Other than TAA

Planet Coaster 2 has support for multiple AA upscaling solutions including FXAA, TAA, Upscaled TAA, FSR 3, and NVIDIA DLSS. Ideally, you would use DLSS for the best possible image reconstruction, especially if you’re playing at a higher resolution.

However, if you’re playing at 1080p, anything other than TAA should look marginally better in terms of image clarity. FXAA will not have the best anti-aliasing, which is why we recommend trying FSR3 or Upscaled TAA over regular TAA.

TAA shouldn’t look that bad at higher resolutions, but if you have an NVIDIA RTX GPU, we recommend using a combination of DLSS with DLDSR for the best possible image.

We hope these recommendations have saved you the headache, and improved the overall image quality of Planet Coaster 2 by reducing the excessive blur in its presentation. If you’re also wondering where your local data is, and what PC features the title has, make sure to look up the save file location for Planet Coaster 2.
