In the name of the bloodmoon, I challenge you!

Bloodmoon Ursaluna is an all-new form for Ursaring’s evolution in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: The Teal Mask. Catching it is no easy task: it has an entire quest all to itself, filled with battles and even a photo safari. Read on to learn what you need to do to get the elusive Bloodmoon Ursaluna.

What to Prepare Before Setting off to Find Bloodmoon Urasluna

  • A special Poké Ball: You only get one Bloodmoon Ursaluna, so make it count!
  • At least 150 Pokémon caught in the Kitakami Pokédex: This is a requirement to start the quest at all.
  • Specially Defensive Pokémon: Unlike its regular counterpart, Bloodmoon Ursaluna is a frighteningly strong Special Attacker.
  • …or a Ghost-type Pokémon: Bloodmoon Ursaluna’s unique attack is Normal-type, so Ghost-type Pokémon will be immune to it.

How to Start the Quest to Find Bloodmoon Ursaluna in The Teal Mask

Find Perrin in Mossui Town and talk to her when you start The Teal Mask DLC. She’ll introduce herself and say she has a favor to ask once you have 150 Pokémon registered in your Kitakami Pokédex. Once you’ve fulfilled this requirement, come back to Mossui Town and talk to her again. Here, she’ll challenge you to a battle.

Battling Perrin in Mossui Town

Perrin might have a Hisuian Growlithe by her side, but she doesn’t use it in battle. Instead, she uses a team of two Pokémon. Their levels vary based on your progression in the main story of Scarlet and Violet. The listed levels are based on whether you’ve beaten Scarlet and Violet’s story.

Noctowl, Level 68

  • Roost
  • Moonblast
  • Hypnosis
  • Dream Eater

Leafeon, Level 70

  • Leaf Blade
  • Swords Dance
  • Quick Attack
  • X-Scissor

After defeating Perrin, she’ll explain about the “Bloodmoon Beast,” Bloodmoon Ursaluna. Your next stop is the Timeless Woods, which is northeast of Oni Mountain or to the east of the Gracious Stones flight point in Kitakami Wilds.

When you join up with Perrin in the Timeless Woods, a Level 65 wild Ariados will challenge you to a battle. Unlike the DLC’s main story Milotic fight in the Crystal Pool, you can catch this Ariados if you want

After dealing with the Ariados, talk to Perrin after watching a quick cutscene. She’ll explain that you need to take 10 pictures of Pokémon that appear on foggy nights. You do not have to wait for the time or weather to change. Simply talk to her when you’re ready to start the next part of this quest.

Taking Photographs in the Timeless Woods

When you talk to Perrin to progress the quest, the time and weather will automatically turn to a foggy night. Here, you’ll have to take pictures of 10 different Pokémon. To take a picture of a Pokémon, press the B button to crouch and make your way to the Pokémon, then press B again to stand up. You can’t take out your camera while crouching. Press down on the D-Pad to take out your camera, center the Pokémon in the viewfinder, then press A.

You can’t be too far from them…

…but you don’t have to be all that close, either.

This will be especially important when trying to take a picture of Sudowoodo, since they run away very quickly when they notice you.

Perrin will let you know whether your shot counts or not, and she’ll give you hints on where to find more Pokémon as you progress. Don’t worry about getting better pictures of Pokémon you’ve already photographed once. Perrin only wants to see photos of new Pokémon each time.

There are more than 10 Pokémon available to take pictures of, but you only need 10 to proceed with the quest. The different Pokémon you can find are:

  • Geodude.
  • Litwick.
  • Hatenna.
  • Vikavolt.
  • Sudowoodo (it helps to take a picture of it from behind!).
  • Volbeat.
  • Illumise (it’s possible to get Volbeat and Illumise in the same shot when they’re close together).
  • Spinarak (on tree trunks).
  • Seedot (in tree branches).
  • Hoothoot (in tree branches; if you scare one away, it will fly into another tree, so follow it stealthily or try to catch a photo of it mid-flight).
  • Lotad (in the lake).
  • Salandit (in a cave east of where Perrin waits).

Take a picture of Perrin’s Growlithe for a cute bit of dialogue! You can also get unique dialogue by taking a pic of Perrin herself.

The process can take a while since you can’t ride Miraidon or Koraidon here, so enjoy the Sinnoh-inspired music while you snap some pics. Once you’re done, you’ll automatically return to Perrin to continue the story. Perrin will ask whether you’re ready to meet Ursaluna or not; if you say yes, you won’t get to save between the photo survey and battling Ursaluna, the Bloodmoon Beast, so be prepared.

Battling the Bloodmoon Beast Titan Ursaluna in The Teal Mask

This battle is Titan-style, but you’re the only one facing down Ursaluna. Like regular Ursaluna, the Bloodmoon Beast is Normal- and Ground-type. If you do this battle after completing The Teal Mask story, the Grass-type Ogerpon is a good choice to bring, but make sure it’s at a high level or EV trained in Special Defense. Quaquaval also has a lot of types at its disposal that hit Bloodmoon Ursaluna for supereffective damage. Another strong choice to bring is Annihilape, which is immune to two of its three attacking moves and resistant to the third.

Bloodmoon Ursaluna’s moves are

  • Blood Moon
  • Calm Mind
  • Earth Power
  • Slash

Blood Moon has a massive 140 Base Power and 100 Accuracy. It can’t be used twice in a row, but Calm Mind sure can be. Calm Mind not only beefs up its Special Defense but powers up its Special Attack, which makes not only Blood Moon but Earth Power stronger as well. This can be a tricky fight if you’re not prepared to have some Pokémon tank Ursaluna’s powerful moves.

After defeating Bloodmoon Ursaluna, you can catch it with any Poké Ball, guaranteed. Use a special Poké Ball since this is your only chance to get it! If you want to use a thematically appropriate Moon Ball but only have one, don’t worry: a Moon Ball is the final reward for completing the Kitakami Pokédex, so you’ll be able to get another after this quest is over.

After the battle is over, return to Mossui Town to talk to Perrin. Here, she’ll give you your final rewards before heading off: a powerful Choice Scarf item and a Hisuian Growlithe of your very own!

And that ends the Bloodmoon Beast quest. If Bloodmoon Ursaluna happens to be the final Pokémon you needed to complete your Kitakami Pokédex (since transferring a regular Ursaluna from Pokémon Legends: Arceus doesn’t unlock the Pokédex entry), you can visit Jacq to pick up a handsome reward.
