How to Fix the Silent Hill 2 Remake Ultrawide Cutscenes Issue on PC

Ultrawide Sunderland!

Silent Hill 2 Remake by Bloober Team is a faithful revival of the 2001 classic from KONAMI and Team Silent. This Unreal Engine 5 release features some incredible visuals on all platforms, and while the PC version has plenty of settings to tweak and support for ultrawide monitors, it’s not perfect. Apart from the traversal stutter, there are black bars in cutscenes while playing Silent Hill 2 Remake. Thankfully, Rose from the widescreen community have already released a patch to address this.

The handy patch from Rose removes the letterboxing from the cutscenes in Silent Hill 2 Remake when viewed at ultrawide resolutions.

Installing the patch is fairly simple, and here is how it works:

  • Head over to the following GitHub link
  • Download the patch file by clicking the Silent.Hill.2.Remake.widescreen.v1.0.zip under assets
  • Extract the file in the following location where Silent Hill 2 Remake is installed:
\SHProto\Binaries\Win64\

Once installed, launch the game, and the cutscenes will now play out without any letterboxing, or black bars at the sides.

All credits go to Rose for creating and testing the patch at 1920×1200, 2560×1080, and 3840×1080. You can learn about their work at their Patreon or BuyMeACoffee pages. For now, there aren’t reported issues with the patch, and it works flawlessly.

If you wish to disable the patch, remove the files you extracted from the zip file. Rose have also released a patch that unlocks the 30 FPS framerate cap during cutscenes in Silent Hill 2 Remake, and we think it’s a great match for the ultrawide patch as well.

It’s unlikely that the developers will remove the letterboxing from the cutscenes in a patch because these are likely created with the black bars in mind, so for now this is your best bet.

To further improve your experience, we recommend turning off chromatic aberration in Silent Hill 2 Remake as well for an improved presentation with a sharper image.
