Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a stunning generational jump for the franchise that finally makes its way to Japan with dual protagonists, each with their unique playstyle and story. Like the last few Assassin’s Creed titles, the PC version runs quite well provided you have the hardware without any major stuttering or performance hiccups.
It has support for several different input types on PC but if you can’t seem to get your PlayStation controller to work properly and are missing the correct prompts in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, here is how you can fix that.
Enable PlayStation Prompts in Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PC
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has native support for several controller types including PlayStation controllers like the DualShock 4 and the DualSense. However, if you’re playing the game on the Steam version, the native profiles aren’t picked up by default because of Steam Input.
Disable Steam Input
Since Steam Input conflicts with the native controller profiles set up by the developers, you have to disable it for Assassin’s Creed Shadows specifically in the Steam library.
- Make sure Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t running
- Open Steam, and navigate to your library
- Here, right-click on Assassin’s Creed Shadows and select Properties
- In the Controller tab, select Disable Steam Input under Override for Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Launch Assassin’s Creed Shadows and your PlayStation controllers will work correctly and display the proper in-game prompts.

I have tested the DualShock 4 and it works well. Even if you have multiple controllers connected, it will switch to the correct one depending on what you use. The only issue I faced with the DualShock 4, in particular, was that the controller speaker couldn’t be turned off.

This means that small audio effects like a block, or parry sound were still coming from the controller. This can be a bit distracting, but I’m sure it will be addressed in a patch. If you’re playing with a DualSense however, it seems you can turn the option off.
Generic Controller Troubleshooting
Outside of Steam Input, there are a few more things you can do to fix any controller issues with Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
- Make sure the controller is actually being picked up by Steam. To check detected controllers currently connected to your PC in the Steam client, select Steam > Steam Settings > Controller:

- Connect one controller at a time to avoid potential conflicts.
- Try a wired connection instead of playing wirelessly.
- Remove any other active input devices like a HOTAS or racing wheel.
Overall, the controller support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows is quite solid and customizable on PC. This is another hit from Ubisoft when it comes to PC features and support. We hope that the minor issues are cleared up in a patch.
