How to Defeat Sierra in Pokémon GO (October 2023)

Sierra’s back with a brand-new team and ambitious trainers stand to gain a Shadow Geodude if they manage to win. So, let’s dive into what you can expect Sierra to throw down and how to best show her and her team the door.

Tip:

If you lose you can always challenge Sierra again!

Pokemon 1:

  • Geodude (Shadow) (possibly shiny)

Pokemon 2:

  • Steelix (Shadow)
  • Gardevoir (Shadow)
  • Sableye (Shadow)

Pokemon 3:

  • Houndoom (Shadow)
  • Gyarados (Shadow)
  • Victreebel (Shadow)

Yes, she has the potential to have quite a few heavy hitters on her team! But with a Shadow Geodude as the possible prize, it’s worth defeating her. Maybe. So, let’s talk counters.

Best Counters for Sierra in Pokemon Go (October 2023)

For her first Pokemon, Geodude, start with a Pokemon that can burn and break down Geodude’s shields while still having utility for the Pokemon you’ll face in round two. Good options that have strong, super-effective moves are:

  • (Primal) Kyogre with Waterfall and Origin Plus
  • (Mega) Swampert with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon

Both Kyogre and Swampert are more than capable of tackling Geodude, Steelix, and Houndoom, giving you an advantage for all three rounds. If luck is on your side, at least. And while their Primal or Mega forms are ideal, it’s not necessary to win out against Sierra’s team.

As for what to do when she pulls out her second Pokemon, it will depend on what she brings out. If she chooses Steelix, keep Kyogre or Swapert in. Alternatively, switch to one of these Pokemon:

  • (Mega) Tyranitar with Smack Down and Brutal Swing.
  • (Primal) Groudon with Mud Shot and Fire Punch

Tyranitar will counter Sierra’s Sabeye, Gyarados, and Houndoom. Groudon will counter Sierra’s Steelix, Gardevoir, Houndoom, and Victreebel. In an ideal world, you’d have both on your team.

If you’re struggling to think of a good third Pokemon, I highly recommend selecting a Pokemon that will help you where you think you’ll struggle. If you know Steelix will give you issues, opt for another Water-Type like Gyarados or Mega Slowbro / Blastoise. This will also help you go toe-to-paw with Houndoom in the final matchup.

But if you just want a good, solid Pokemon, opt for Dragonite with Dragon Breath and Outrage. Dragonite has few weaknesses, can take a beating, and packs a hefty punch that can bridge the gap you might have in your team.

Beating Sierra is much more difficult than stomping Grunts, but the rewards are great. You’ll get 1,000 Stardust, two random items, and the opportunity to catch Geodude (Shadow), who has a 1 in 64 chance of being Shiny!
