You can be whoever you want to be in Stardew Valley.

Stardew Valley is so packed full of content that you could find yourself farming, fighting, mining, and crafting for hundreds of hours, if not more. When you’re putting such long hours into your playthrough, sometimes it’s nice to give your character a new look to freshen things up a bit. There is a way to change both your name and appearance in Stardew Valley, but it doesn’t come easy. If you want to give your character a name change or a makeover, here is everything you need to know to get started.

How to Change Your Name and Appearance in Stardew Valley

To change your name and appearance in Stardew Valley, you must befriend the Wizard and use the Shrine of Illusions in his basement. The Shrine costs 500g to use and allows you to change your name, appearance, and gender.

Residents of Stardew Valley don’t invite you into their homes unless you have two hearts with them. The Wizard is a little harder to please and requires you to have at least four hearts before he lets you into his basement to access the Shrine of Illusions.

Reaching four hearts with the Wizard isn’t exactly difficult, but it can take some time. Friendships in Stardew Valley, much like in real life, take time and effort to blossom. If you want to make friends with him as soon as possible, you will want to talk to him every day and shower him with plenty of his most loved gifts.

The Wizard loves all things spooky. Void Essence and Solar Essence are some of his most valued gifts, as well as Purple Mushrooms and Super Cucumbers. Void Essence, Solar Essence, and Purple Mushrooms can all be found in the lower levels of the Mines, and Super Cucumbers can be fished up from the Beach in Summer and Fall, between the hours of 6 PM – 2 AM.

If you’re looking for some extra Purple Mushrooms and you chose the Mushroom Cave on your Farm, they can also spawn there occasionally.

Once you have four hearts with the Wizard, you will be allowed to sneak past him and enter the basement in his Tower. The entrance to the basement is a little tricky to find, but you can make your way there by using the hatch along the back wall.

How to Use the Shrine of Illusions in Stardew Valley

The Shrine of Illusions operates in the same way the character creation screen does at the beginning of the game, so you should be somewhat familiar with the way it works. You can change your name and favorite thing by typing in the boxes at the top of the window.

Your hairstyle, skin color, and accessories can be changed by clicking the arrows on the left side of the window, and the sliders on the right can be manipulated to change your hair and eye color.

You can rotate your character by pressing the left and right arrows on the character display icon at the top left, so you can see your changes from every angle. And if there are just too many options to go through and you can’t decide what you want your character to look like, you can press the dice icon in the top left corner to randomize your character.

Once you’re happy with your changes, press Ok to confirm!

Stardew Valley is full of surprises and has introduced many changes of its own with the 1.6 Update. There are new crops to grow, bigger chests on offer, and even new weapons to keep you safe in the Mines while you’re searching for more Void Essence for the Wizard.
