A sword may not be Zelda’s weapon of choice in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, but that doesn’t mean she can’t use one. Echoes of Wisdom allows you to embody the sword-wielding and infamous Link for as long as your Might Gauge allows. In that form, you can use a Shield, a Bow, Bombs, and, of course, a Sword. You have to unlock it first, though.
Where to Get the Sword in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
You can unlock the Sword by defeating Sword Link in the Suthorn Ruins.
The Suthorn Ruins is the first dungeon in the game. You will get the opportunity to explore it during The Mysterious Rifts quest. After escaping imprisonment in the Castle and reaching the safety of Suthorn Village, you will be tasked with finding the Ruins.
The map marker leads you to a road northeast of Suthorn Village that has been wrenched apart by a massive Rift. To reach your destination, you must travel east through the forest to get around the roadblock. Once you reach the waypoint, interact with the glowing yellow circle to enter the Stilled Suthorn Forest. Travel up through the Still World to find the entrance to the Suthorn Ruins.
How to Beat Sword Link in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
You will encounter Sword Link shortly after entering the Suthorn Ruins. As Zelda isn’t armed with any weapons of her own, you will have to get creative to defeat Sword Link, but creativity is the name of the game in Echoes of Wisdom.
There are a couple of ways you can approach this fight. Your first option is to summon monsters to distract Link, baiting him into turning his back so you can attack his weak spot. The fastest and easiest way to defeat him, however, is by using the powers of your friend, Tri.
Link uses his Shield religiously in this battle. Using Tri, however, you can press ZL to target Link’s Shield before pressing X to grab hold of it. Then, you can walk backward, wrenching the Shield from his grip and leaving Link open to attacks. Make sure you have some monsters on deck to take advantage of Link while he’s exposed.
Once Link reaches half health, he powers up with a purple mist that makes him more aggressive. Keep stealing his Shield or attacking him while his back is turned to defeat Sword Link. Once you do, you will see his Sword sticking straight up out of the ground in the Ruins. Interact with the Sword to claim it as your own.
How to Use the Sword in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
You can use the Sword by pressing the up button to enter Swordfighter Mode. While transformed, you can swing to your heart’s content until the gauge in the top left corner runs out. You can replenish your gauge by collecting the blue bubbles you will find floating in the air around you.
You won’t find these bubbles all over Hyrule, however, so use your transformations wisely. They will mainly appear in places where the game expects you to use the Sword. Blue potions will also replenish the gauge when you’re in a pinch.
Hold down the attack button to unleash a powerful spin attack!
Link’s Sword makes a world of difference in Echoes of Wisdom and finally gives Zelda the opportunity to defend herself rather than relying on her Echo Minions. Some bosses, like the one in the Gerudo Sanctum, for example, are much easier to defeat with the Sword.
How to Upgrade the Sword in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
You won’t be able to upgrade the Sword at the time of unlocking it, but you will be able to as you progress further into the story. Once you’ve completed the Suthorn Ruins and delved more into the mysteries of the Rift, you will meet a character called Lueburry.
Lueburry knew Link before he was stolen away by the Rift and was supplying him with weapons to help him on his mission. Since the Sword you wield is a copy of Link’s, Lueburry can help you upgrade it. To do this, you need to collect Might Crystals.
Might Crystals are given to you as a reward for completing dungeons or are hidden in chests around Hyrule. You can take your Might Crystals to the large machine in Lueburry’s House northeast of Suthorn Village and use them to upgrade the weapons you will win after defeating Still Links.
You can upgrade the Sword twice. The first upgrade will cost 10 Might Crystals, and the second will cost 20.
