Gazog, Son of Zorg is one of the first possible bosses you’ll run into as you make your way through the lands of Grandery. He’s the champion of the tribe and a worthy adversary with hard-hitting attacks thanks to a large spiked mace.
Thankfully, he doesn’t have many moves and goes down easily once you figure out what to dodge and what to deflect. Here is how to beat Gazog and counter everything he throws at you.
Beat Gazog, Son of Zorg in Absolum
Gazog has two phases but uses the same attacks in both, albeit with longer combos. His attacks are slow, which can throw you off when you’re supposed to deflect, but apart from his one red flashing attack, you want to deflect everything else.
Here is how to deal with each of Gazog’s attacks.
Phase One
Gazog will perform the following attacks during phase one.
Downward Thrust
Gazog will raise his spiked mace and bring it down with a lot of force, and your best bet is to either deflect or dodge it. Both approaches are viable, but dodging means you can follow up with a punish instead of being pushed back with a deflect. So when you see him lift the mace, dodge downwards, and hit him right after he brings down the mace:

Similarly, you can deflect it as well, but like I said, you’ll have to dash into him after being pushed back.

Spin Attack
Gazog will spin his mace around twice, and you need to deflect it when it comes it comes in contact with you the first time, and dash under it the second time to deal damage.

You can’t dodge this attack and will end up being caught in his spin animation if you try.
Red Flashing Attack – Divekick
Gazog will squat for a second, and you’ll see a red flash. He’ll then jump and perform a divekick in your general direction. Deflecting this will break your guard, so it’s best to dodge it or simply move downwards.

It’s easier than it looks, just don’t try to deflect or jump over it.

Phase Two
After you bring his health down by around 40%, Gazog will let out a roar and go into phase two.

All the attacks are technically the same, but last longer with a higher number of hits per attack.
Downward Thrust (Buffed)
For the buffed version, Gazog will bring down the mace three times, which you should deflect this time around. After the third one, you can dash underneath the fourth and deal some damage.

Spin Attack – Buffed
In the second phase, Gazog will spin his mace five times, and you’ll need to deflect each if you want to properly punish him. If you deflect each hit, he’ll get tired from spinning it that many times, and you can start beating him up when he’s vulnerable. Do not try to dodge this.

Horn Blow
Gazog will blow his horn to call in reinforcements. It’s a hit or miss, but you can technically interrupt this if you’re fast enough; but in most cases, a few goblins will join the fight either way.

Battle Strategy
Now that you can counter every single attack, I recommend the following to bring him to his knees fast:
- Be aggressive: This game is not about staying put or waiting for your turn. You want to deal damage and perform deflect/dodges during that. It’s a very active form of combat.
- When he performs the divekick, just get out of the way. It’s really not worth losing your footing over, and dodging gives you more opportunities to punish him.
- Throwables are very useful during this fight as well because he doesn’t really run off-screen, and if you’ve stocked up on those, you can throw them together for a good amount of damage.
- If you’re far into the game, don’t waste your ultimate attack on him.
Associated Trophy / Achievement
Beating Gazog, Son of Zorg in Absolum, will unlock the There Can Be Only One achievement.

Gazog is the safer option if you don’t want to deal with a boss with several more attacks like Rudolf. However, he hits harder, and each attack has a deceptive wind-up animation.
