How to Obtain the Aerondight Sword in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Get your hands on the best sword in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's latest expansion.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

There’s a good sword – and then there’s a GREAT sword, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s latest expansion, Blood and Wine, has a superb one to find in the game. The Aerondight silver sword can be yours, but only by tackling a secondary quest within the game. Here’s how to do it!

The sword itself is a beauty, with the ability to let off a powerful charge, which in turn can do massive damage based on how well you use it. Basically, it helps push damage output by ten percent, and, once fully charged, can create critical hit damage with most foes. You’ll need to recharge it over time, or start over if you take a hit, but has a really cool set-up with its damage scaling – and can send most enemies to an early grave.

How To Obtain the Aerondight Sword In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

You’ll be given a secondary quest called There Can Only Be One. You’ll find it either on the notice boards in Toussaint or having a word with the Hermit located just to the lake on the west side of Corvo Bianco.

This is where it gets tricky, as Geralt must balance the five chivalric values to prove he is worthy of the sword. The stones will read off just what all you need – Generosity, Honor, Compassion, Valor and Wisdom. The quests included in Blood and Wine will help balance choices with each of these, to show if you’re a worthy wielder, or not so much.

Each of the virtues are broken down below, with different situations in which you can improve your chances with each one. There are other possibilities that you can explore, but these are the general ones to keep in mind:

Compassion

This comes after taking down the Shaelmaar (https://www.primagames.com/games/witcher-3/tips/how-kill-shaelmaar-witcher-3-wild-hunt) in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and you’re given the choice of whether to kill it or let it live another day. You can also show compassion in the Big Game Hunter mission, where you’re given a chance to spare the panthers. Talk with the Count afterward and ask about the “New life?” dialogue choice, and you’ll be given a chance to go to his exhibition. Make sure to attend, and you’ll open up on compassion.

Honor

Next up, take on the quest Warble of a Smitten Knight in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which you can find with Guillaume at the Tourney Grounds medical tent. Go through the mission and take on the horse race. You’ll have a chance to duel, and be able to win it to take some Honor. Also, if you talk to Vivienne, make sure you keep her secret. After all, it’s honorable.

You can also tackle the quest called Til Death Do You Part, in which you can work out the differences with a pair of bickering ghosts in the cemetery. Once that’s done, go to the Tavern to chat with someone about the marital argument, and you’ll be good to go.

Generosity

It’s all about being nice. Finish the Blood Run quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and a kid will walk up to you in Beauclair, letter in hand. Give him a tip (don’t short change him) and you’ll be on your way. You can also buy a painting during the Witcher as an Old Man quest to earn some generosity as well.

Valor

If you’re on the Warble of a Smitten Knight quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, finish up the Tourney once you’re done with the other things happening in the forest. This will earn you valor with ease. You can also take on the Feet as Cold as Ice contract (by talking to a knight located near a cave just on the north side of Beauclair). You can offer the trophy to the knight instead of keeping it to yourself.

Wisdom

Finally, take on the La Cage Au Fou mission in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, where you’ll take a closer look at a creature’s lair. Duck into the closet real quick, and, when given the opportunity, lift the curse on the nearby creature as they try to eat dinner without a spoon. You can also take on the Father Knows Worst mission and make sure that nobody dies.

Once You’re Done…

After completing all of these The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt missions, return to the Hermit by the lake. He’ll judge you based on your actions, and you’ll need to take him on in combat. His water attacks can be tough to dodge, but if your combat skills are up to snuff, you can take him down. Once he’s defeated, the Lady of the Lake will appear, and the Aerondight sword is as good as yours.

It’s a tough quest, but you’ll feel much more noble as you complete each of the virtues and grasp this great sword for yourself. Good luck!
