How Many Hearts Can you Get in Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK)? – Answered

How to max-out Link's health

When you first start Tears of the Kingdom, it’s very clear that it’s a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild – Link and Zelda are there, they look the same as in the last game, and you’ll even have a short time to control Link during the introduction, with his 30 hearts and maxed out stamina bar.

There wouldn’t be much point in having all of that from the start of a new game, would there? So, freshly rehydrated Ganon will take care of that, returning you very shortly to just the three heart containers you actually start the game with. Many fans are wondering – how many heart containers can be regained during The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Let’s find out!

What is the Maximum Number of Hearts That You Can Get in Tears of the Kingdom?

In Tears of the Kingdom, it is possible to have even more hearts than in Breath of the Wild – the maximum number is 40 heart containers and the maximum stamina takes three wheels. However, it is not possible to have both, at least for now. If you decide to go for maximum stamina, the most heart containers you can have is 38 – still eight more than in Breath of the Wild.

However, since Tears of the Kingdom is a much tougher game with a lot more danger, maximizing the number of Heart Containers is not a bad idea. In order to have the maximum 40 heart containers, you need to sacrifice a little stamina at Horned Statue, which we wrote a detailed Horned Statue guide about. You will need to trade half of one Stamina Wheel for additional 2 Heart Containers in order to reach the maximum number of 40.

Where To Find Heart Containers in Tears of the Kingdom

So, like we said, you start the game with just three hearts, the rest is up to you to find. Defeating each Temple Boss plus one additional Hyrule Castle Boss will give you additional six hearts – but good luck trying to take them on with the default health bar. It is a good idea to first go for the 38 Heart Containers that can be gained by completing Shrines in the Hyrule Surface and Sky maps.

There are 152 shrines in the game if you exchange all 152 Blessings of Light you get at Goddess Statues for 38 Heart Containers (4 Blessings of Light = 1 Heart Container or a piece of Stamina Wheel). There is also one additional Heart Container that you get as a reward for the “Call from the Depths” Side Quest.
