How Does the Deck of Card (Card Chains) Work in Backpack Battles – Explained

How Does the Deck of Cards and Card Chains Work in Backpack Battles, Explained

The Reaper is one of the more interesting classes in Backpack Battles. Not only does it offer a medley of subclasses, ranging from poison-doling Vampires to the doll-collecting witch.

The Deck of Cards is an item that can be purchased from the shop for three gold. But by itself, this Deck of Cards does nothing beyond allowing playing cards to appear in the shop and giving you two Luck buffs at the start of the round.

To make the Deck of Cards work, you’ll need to buy at least one card. Once you have at least one card, place your Deck of Cards in your backpack. The Deck of Cards and all the following cards you place after need to be laid end-to-end.

This means that once you’ve placed the Deck of Cards, place your next card at the bottom. You may need to rotate your card until you see a golden star. Once you see a golden star, place the card in the back, and it will connect to the Deck of Cards. This establishes a Card Chain.

Every subsequent card you buy must then be put at the end of the Card Chain. You may need to rotate each card you place to ensure that the gold star appears. Cards can “turn corners”, meaning you can cover the outer perimeter of the entire backpack. You can move and replace cards in the Card Chain, but you may need to rotate them again to re-establish the chain. You’ll know a chain is active if you see a blue line attached to the cards.

The cards are then revealed in the order they’re placed, with the first card being the card next to the Deck of Cards. I’ll delve into all the cards in the game and the order you should place them in below.

Best Card Order for the Deck of Cards in Backpack Battles

Once you’ve got your cards, the order you put them in is paramount to netting yourself a victory. Some cards see benefits for being played first, while others are better played last. While you may prioritize different cards depending on your build, this is a good one-size-fits-all order:

  1. The Fool
  2. Ace of Spades
  3. The Lovers
  4. Reverse!
  5. The Lovers
  6. Ace of Spades
  7. The Lovers
  8. Darkest Lotus
  9. White-Eyes Blue Dragon
  10. Holo Fire Lizard

The card you should always put first is The Fool, as you’ll get an immediate +1 Empower for doing so. This will increase your weapon’s attack. After that, lay down the Ace of Spades to take advantage of the Ace’s odd card number bonus to get Luck and Spikes. Then, follow with The Lovers to take advantage of The Lovers’ even card number bonus to get regeneration. From there, follow up with Reverse!, as you’ll likely lay a duplicate card after this point.

As for our final three cards, the Darkest Lotus, the White-Eyes Blue Dragon, and Holo Fire Lizard, the best order will boil down to preference and build. If you’re going for attrition, then White-Eyes is the way to go. But if you prefer a full-fledged onslaught, put Holo Fire Dragon at the bottom of the chain.

While cards can turn the tides of the battle, knowing the Reaper’s item recipes is paramount to snatching victory, too.
