How to Create a Skater in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

The one vague UI element happens to be a big one!
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is out, and fans and critics alike are happy about one of these games for the first time in ages. The development team at Vicarious Visions seems to have knocked it out of the park again, and everyone’s having a good time remembering their childhoods. Most of the game is probably exactly as you remember it aside form the new stuff, but one thing the game doesn’t make super clear is how to get to the Create a Skater menu. Heck, it’s even kind of unclear how to change your skater from Tony Hawk to any of the other real-life options.

How to Change or Create a Skater in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

When you first start Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, you’ll start as Tony Hawk for obvious reasons. Even on the game’s main menu screen, you’ll see the options toolbar across the top of the screen, which lets you do things like customize your current skater, check out options, so on and so forth. But there’s no obvious “change” option in the UI. However, down by your skater’s name is the icon for the Triangle (or equivalent) button, not marked with any text. That’s the button you need to press to access the character select screen.

There, you’ll find the option to choose one of the many real-life skaters, old and new, included in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2. You’ll also see five slots for custom skaters, all of which are marked with “+” signs. So all you need to do at that point is place your cursor over one of the slots, and press whatever your “confirm” button is to move over to the Create a Skater screen. From there, it’ll be everything you might expect as a seasoned Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater fan.

It’s weird that this option isn’t part of the main menu’s tool bar, and that there’s just a context-free button prompt. But it is what it is, and having it right next to the skater’s name is presumably the hint. But it’s a popular enough search term that some players out there are glossing right over it! But hey, we get it. That’s why we’re here for you.
