Of the three guilds in Sea of Thieves, the Merchant Alliance is the one that will send you on missions to capture chickens and pigs. Before you embark on one of these animal hunt voyages, there are a few things you’ll need in order to get the job done. Follow the steps in this guide to learn how to catch chickens, pigs, and snakes for the Merchant Alliance in Sea of Thieves.
The quests for finding chickens, pigs, and snakes in Sea of Thieves come from the Merchant Alliance. At an outpost, the Merchant Alliance vendor is located on the pier inside a small tent, just beside the merchant who sells ship customizations. Talk to the Merchant Alliance NPC to accept their quests.
How to Get a Chicken Coops, Pig Crates, and Snake Baskets
Each type of animal in Sea of Thieves can only be caught using a specific container, which include pig crates, chicken coops, and snake baskets. You’ll need to get the corresponding container for your voyage from the Merchant Alliance guild NPC prior to setting sail.
After voting for and accepting an animal capture voyage at the table inside your ship, you must return to the outpost and speak with the Merchant Alliance NPC again to obtain the appropriate containers. Grab a few more containers than you need for the voyage, just in case.

Tips for Capturing Chickens, Pigs, and Snakes
Below we’ve listed several tips to keep in mind when searching for and capturing each type of animal in Sea of Thieves.
How to Capture Chickens
Chicken voyages usually require you to retrieve chickens with a specific feather color. Check to make sure you’re grabbing the correct colored chickens for each task. Listen for a clucking sound to track down chickens on each island. Chickens can’t swim, so try to keep their coop above water when carrying them back to your ship. Store them above deck so that they won’t drown if your ship starts to take on water.
How to Capture Pigs
Pigs are as easy to spot as they are to catch. The tricky part about pigs is that they need to be constantly fed bananas. If you neglect your captured pig’s feeding schedule, then the pig will squeal loudly and will sit down in protest. Just like chickens, you should make sure to keep each pig’s head above water as well.
How to Capture Snakes
Snakes are trickier to capture than pigs and chickens. When you approach a snake to catch it with your snake basket, you must put the snake basket down on the ground and wait. Bring out your instrument and play a tune to calm the snake down. When you see the snake sway to the music, that’s your cue to capture it in your snake basket.
Now that you know how to capture chickens, pigs, and snakes in Sea of Thieves, you should be one step closer to leveling up your reputation with the Merchant Alliance guild. For more Sea of Thieves tips, head over to our Sea of Thieves guide hub.
