When players aren’t busy practicing magic and taking classes in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, they will be spending time getting to know some of the other students at Hogwarts and making new friends. Throughout the game, players can cultivate these friendships by leveling them up to unlock additional story content and earn free rewards. Throughout the game, players can form friendships with several other students at Hogwarts. Players will be able to meet and befriend new characters mostly by playing through the main storyline. Currently, there are seven NPCs that players can befriend in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. Each character will belong to one of the four houses and will have specific personality traits, skills, and values.
Here are all the NPCs that you can befriend in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, along with the year you can meet them:
- Rowan Khanna (Year 1)
- Ben Copper (Year 1)
- Penny Haywood (Year 1)
- Bill Weasley (Year 2)
- Nymphadora Tonks (Year 3)
- Tulip Karasu (Year 3)
- Barnaby Lee (Unavailable)

Later on in Year 1, you can meet both Ben and Penny, who belong to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, respectively. Players must make it to Year 2 to meet Bill Weasley, while Nymphadora and Tulip become available in Year 3. You may have also noticed Barnaby Lee in your list of possible friends. However, Barnaby Lee is not currently available for friendship and it is not clear how to befriend this Slytherin character just yet.
How to Level Up Friends in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery
Interacting with these characters causes you to level up your friendship with them, which will eventually allow friends to join you during certain quests. You can also earn some free gems for leveling up your friends, which makes strengthening bonds with certain characters that much more valuable in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
Complete Handshake Quests
One of the primary ways to level up your friendships in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is to complete side quests for certain friends. If a quest has a handshake icon above it, then that means it’s a quest that can potentially level up your friendship with a character. These quests typically involve brief dialogue where you will have to answer a series of questions. You’ll have to tailor your answers to coincide with the personality traits and attributes of that friend.
Level Up Your Own Attributes
In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, you can view a friend’s attributes by tapping on their avatar icon in the upper corner to see whether they fall under Courage, Knowledge, or Empathy. If you have enough points in your own attributes, then you’ll have a better chance of leveling up your friendship and even unlocking more dialogue options.
However, if your stats for a particular attribute aren’t high enough, it’s best to wait until you’ve increased your stats a bit before trying to level up a friend with the same attribute. Since you have a limited number of chances to correctly answer dialogue questions to level up a friendship, you don’t want to squander these opportunities by having attribute levels that are too low.
Friendships Can Come at a Cost
In some cases, you will need to spend a bit of coin before you can start a friendship quest with a character. Though coins aren’t that hard to come by in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, you should still make sure to always have some coin available in case you want to complete a friendship side quest and level up a friend. If you’re making decent progress through the main story and are working through classes to earn House Points, then you should have little trouble maintaining a steady flow of cash.
