God of War – All Niflheim Cipher Locations

Where to find all Niflheim Cipher pieces to unlock the Niflheim Realm in God of War.

God of War contains multiple realms for players to visit on their journey as Kratos and Atreus. Two realms in particular are unlocked using language ciphers. Those two realms are Muspelheim  and Niflheim. In this guide, we’ll explain where to find all four Niflheim Cipher pieces in God of War for those of you looking to travel to the realm of fog.

In order to travel to the realm of Niflheim, players must complete a language cipher that has been broken into four pieces. Each Niflheim Cipher piece is found within a chest somewhere in the world. The ornate chests containing the Niflheim Ciphers will have a mask on the front and must be opened by both Kratos and Atreus, similar to the legendary chests.

Although the Niflheim Ciphers are found throughout Midgard, most of them can’t be obtained until later in the game. You must make progress in the main story mission if you hope to obtain all four Niflheim Ciphers in God of War.

It’s also important to note that some players have found Niflheim Ciphers in different locations than the ones listed here. These are the areas where we found the NIflheim Ciphers in God of War, but you may find them in other locations in your playthrough depending how much you’ve explored in the game.

God of War All Niflheim Cipher Pieces

Niflheim Cipher #1 – The Mountain

One Niflheim Cipher is located atop the snowy summit of The Mountain. When you return to The summit for the second time during the main story, you will need to take a different path than you did the first time. This alternate route leads to an open platform with a Realm Tear in the center. Near the cliff, you will find an ornate chest containing a NIflheim Cipher piece.

Note that once you leave the summit the first time, you will not be able to return to the mountain until much later in the game. You will eventually obtain the ability to fast travel back to the mountain if you play far enough into the main story.

Niflheim Cipher #2 – Ruins of the Ancient

The next Niflheim Cipher piece can be found in the Ruins of the Ancient, which is along the north side of the Lake of Nine near Konunsgard. The lake’s water level needs to be lowered for a second time in order to access this area, so be sure to play far enough into the main story if this hasn’t happened yet.

Sail over to the Ruins of the Ancient and dock at the beach. There will be a large Ancient patrolling the area, but don’t worry. You won’t need to fight it to obtain the Niflheim Cipher. When you arrive on the beach, hop over the stone barrier ahead and go across the open area to find a chest containing a Niflheim Cipher piece along the far wall.

Niflheim Cipher #3 and #4 – Tyr’s Temple

To reach the third and fourth Niflheim Ciphers in God of War, you will need to play through the main story mission and make your way to the area below Tyr’s Temple in the Lake of Nine. You will eventually go down a lift to an area where you must break the chains binding the temple. There will be two paths leading left and right, one for each chain.

In the rooms containing each chain, there will be an alcove with a legendary chest containing a Niflheim Cipher piece. Before breaking the chains, make sure to loot these chests to obtain the last pieces of the Niflheim Cipher in God of War.

Collecting all four Niflheim Ciphers in God of War will grant you access to the Niflheim Realm. Head over to the Realm Travel Room and turn the dial to Niflheim to travel to the realm of fog. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you’ve collected all four Muspelheim Ciphers so that you can travel to the fiery Muspelheim Realm as well.
