Fortnite – How to Get New Heroes

by Josh Hawkins

Fortnite is about more than just building a fancy base and killing lots of husks. In fact, if you don’t have a Hero that you know and like, you’re going to have a hard time really getting into the game and standing a chance. That’s why it’s important to unlock new Heroes in the game. In this article we’ll show you how to unlock Heroes in Fortnite, and even share a few pointers about each type of Hero available to players.

How to Unlock New Heroes

The best way to and the only way that we’ve found so far) to unlock new Heroes is to open up Llama packs from the Loot section of the main menu. The good news is that Llama packs can be earned by completing quests, and you can complete Daily Quests to earn special Vbucks, which can be used to purchase even better Llama packs.

Unlocking new Heroes takes time in Fortnite, and unless you picked up the Deluxe, Super Deluxe, or the Limited-Edition versions of the game, you’ll probably have a few good hours to spend with the basic Soldier class that you start off with. Believe it or not, this is actually by design, and the design works, because it gives you a chance to get used to the game’s basic mechanics before you start specializing in one particular class.

Don’t get us wrong, we love all of the classes in Fortnite. But, if you really want to master a specific class, you’ll want to focus on it instead of spreading your resources out to all the different classes in the game. Now that you know how to get new Heroes, let’s talk about the different classes in the game.

The Soldier is the most basic and well-rounded class available. This class deals lots of damage quickly, has access to Grenades and Mines and other explosive gadgets, and just has some of the best all-around defense and offense in the game. The biggest cons here, though, are the fact that it’s difficult to specialize in this class, as it is to well-rounded, and it doesn’t have any bonuses for building (which may not matter to some of you). If you want a well-rounded class that is capable of dealing lots of damage, though, the Soldier is the way to go.

The Constructor class is for those who enjoy building. While the build system plays a vital part in Fortnite’s basic mechanics, the biggest area that you build within is your own home base, when you defend your Storm Shield. But, if you’re like us, and you really enjoy Fortnite’s building system, then the Constructor class is the way to go. Not only can you take a lot of damage (the Constructor’s are super tanky), but you also build structures quicker, and you build them cheaper—meaning you save a lot on resources. The biggest con here, though, is that the Constructor is terrible at offense, and the damage that they deal isn’t nearly as high as other classes like the Soldier or Ninja.

Which brings us to our next class, the Ninja. The Ninja class is everything you might expect. It’s great at melee, has a super-fast movement speed, and deals a lot of damage with melee weapons like swords. The biggest con here, though, is the low defense. If you don’t mind being squishy, then the Ninja could work for you. Oh, and did we mention you can still use guns and you have a really nifty double jump that’s helpful at evading enemies? The Ninja class is great for moving around the map and exploring hard to reach areas, just don’t expect to hold down the fort by standing in one place.

The final class we want to cover is the Outlander. This class specializes in exploring and finding rare loot, which can be great for those looking to fill their inventory with some of the game’s best Schematics. The Outlander does have a very low offense and defense, though, which means you’ll need to rely on fellow party members to deal the larger amounts of damage possible. You will find treasure chests and other hidden loot much easier, though, and the Outlander can also make use of the Fragments situated around each map, allowing them to call in things like Supply Llamas and other useful technology that can assist the team.

The beautiful thing about Fortnite’s class system, is that each class has its own abilities, and each Hero has their own way of doing things. Be sure to check out each Hero you unlock to see what their abilities are, and try to choose a Hero and Class that fits well with your playstyle. For example, people who hate building in Fortnite do not want to play as a Constructor, as that is the main goal of the class.
