FFXVI: Quality vs. Performance Mode Comparison

One of your only graphical decisions.

As a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Final Fantasy XVI won’t have too many Graphical settings for you to mess around with, but there is one that every console gamer knows. In this guide, I’ll compare the Performance Mode and the Quality Mode in FFXVI so you can decide which one is right for you.

Graphics vs. Frame Rate Mode in Final Fantasy XVI

The Quality or Graphics Mode in FFXVI will prioritize resolution at 4K and lock the frame rate to 30 FPS as a maximum. As for the Performance or Frame Rate mode, the game is set to reach 60 FPS while leaving resolution at 1080p to 1440p. However, the Performance Mode in Final Fantasy XVI isn’t as stable as it sounds.

Plenty of footage has come out that shows the PlayStation 5 struggling to reach that 60 FPS mark, especially when you start intense battles. I tried both modes in my first few hours with the game, and I can confirm that the Performance or Frame Rate mode doesn’t work as well as you might hope. I could certainly see plenty of frame drops as I played, and that’s not always worth running.

Should you Choose Performance or Quality Mode in FFXVI?

I recommend playing Final Fantasy XVI with the Graphics or Quality Mode enabled in the settings. This setting is far more stable than the Frame Rate alternative, which makes choosing one of these much simpler. If you want a game that runs smoother and has a better resolution as well, then the Quality mode is the choice for you.

In future patches, it’s possible that the FPS-based mode will be optimized. That would certainly make the Performance Mode much more enticing, but we’ll have to wait and see when that arrives for the PlayStation 5.
