How to Complete the “Road to Freedom” Quest and Join the Railroad in Fallout 4

In order to join the elusive Railroad group in Fallout 4, you need to go to Diamond City and explore a little bit. While you roam the city, one of the many ambient conversations and rumors that you hear will unlock this quest. Once you get the “Road to Freedom” quest to start, it won’t actually tell you what to do so you will need to figure many things out on your own. Some knowledge of real-life Boston’s history will go a long way here, but if you can’t be bothered with all that mysterious clue hunting, check out our guide below that explains how to complete this quest step by step:

How to Crack the Freedom Trail Code in Fallout 4

  1. Go to the Boston Common Park (east from Diamond City)
  2. Start a conversation with the Tour Bot near the statue.
  3. Look below and notice the brick path on the ground; it is the famous “Freedom Trail” that will lead you to all of the historic sites around Boston. At each site, you will be able to find a number with a letter.
  4. Follow the path and remember (or write down) all of the number and letter combinations you find.
  5. The final location on the path is Old North Church, located northeast of Boston Common.
  6. Enter the Old North Church and head for the basement. There you will find a catacomb with a strange dial-lock.
  7. Enter the code by rotating the dial in both directions. The code is as follows: 1R (fReedom) 2A (trAil) 3I (traIl) 4L (traiL) 5R (tRail) 60 (freedOm) 7A (trAil) 8D (freeDom).
  8. Press the center button each time the indicated letter is set correctly. Once you input all the letters and press the center button for each, a hidden passage will open.
  9. Go down the hidden path until you reach the Railroad faction inside.
  10. Talk with Railroad members and accept their “Tradecraft” quest.

Once you finish this quest, you will become part of the Railroad faction and unlock their member Deacon as a companion as well. Congratulations!
