While kneeling behind an object you can lower yourself behind it so you will not be exposed to the enemy.

While your gun is drawn aim straight towards the ground to get behind the object.

No one can see you from the other side.

You can do the same while standing.

You can use this to stay mobile and not limit yourself to the restrictions of being prone. you will be able to react faster to enemies flanking you without the awkward kneel/prone animations getting you killed.
