Can You Save Soap in Modern Warfare 3 (MW3)? Answered

Soap might be one of the most beloved characters in Call of Duty. And while his death might be old news, happening for the first time all the way back in 2016, seeing it again in MW3 is like a slap in the face.

And, unfortunately, you can’t save Soap in MW3. Though people have tried all types of ways to prevent his death by killing his would-be-murderer.

Soap’s downfall begins when he and the rest of the team pursue Makarov during the Countdown campaign mission. Task Force 141 heads into the tunnels, only to discover the bodies of civilians. The mission continues as Soap and the rest of the Task Force fight their way through juggernauts and Konni Group personnel, eventually reaching a bomb that’s already counting down.

Soap and Price set to work in disarming it. And just as Soap prepares to cut the wire, Makarov shoots him in the head. It’s a brutal, quick death, and it feels as if Task Force 141, and the players, don’t have time to grieve in the moment.

But in a final cut scene, Gaz, Ghost, and Price say their farewells.

This is the only ending for Soap. Though you have plenty of moments with Makarov before that final pivotal moment in Countdown, Makarov’s plot armor is thick. Shooting him while he’s on your side will lead to a game over screen. The same thing will happen if you chuck a grenade at him. And when you’re escorting him to the helicopter, the best you can do is shove him roughly into walls. Not quite the punishment he deserves.

It’s a sad fate for Soap, but it’s a harsh reminder about the reality of war and all that it takes.
