Can You Keep Your Early Access Progress for Baldur’s Gate 3?

The answer to the question of whether you can keep your Early Access progress in Baldur’s Gate 3 is no, you cannot. You won’t be able to bring any of your Early Access saves with you once Baldur’s Gate 3 releases in full.

On the Larian Studios web forums, the question is answered as follows:

“No. Due to the amount of updates and changes expected during the Early Access stage, saves made during Early Access will not be compatible with the full version of the game when it releases.”

For those who’ve yet to purchase Baldur’s Gate 3 and are wondering how much content you’re getting, the answer is approximately 25 hours. If you’re unhappy with the character you’ve created it stands to reason you can extract more than 25 hours from the Early Access by doing things like starting over from scratch. It’s entirely up to you.

The Early Access version you get to play centers around Act 1, Larian Studios are actively working on Acts 2 and 3. Larian has a number of updates planned for Baldur’s Gate 3 while it’s in Early Access, and they’ve stated that they estimate Baldur’s Gate 3 will be in Early Access for at least one year.

While it makes sense that Early Access save files are non-transferable based on all the changes the game will undergo over the next year or so, it can feel a little weird putting a considerable amount of time into Baldur’s Gate 3 only to have it wiped.

It’s something important to keep in mind while playing Baldur’s Gate 3, or prior to purchasing the game in order to sample its Early Access content. Enjoy your time in Early Access, but don’t get too attached to your character and the progress they’re making in Baldur’s Gate 3.
