The Witcher 3 Remastered reworks Geralt’s skill tree, so several of the best skills from older builds no longer work exactly the same way. Unlocking them is different and many have had their effects changed. Here is a breakdown of the best skills to get in The Witcher 3 Remastered.

Skill Tree Changes in The Witcher 3 Remastered

You still do not have enough points or active slots to take everything, so the best approach is to prioritize skills that improve the attacks, Signs, and resources you already use rather than spreading points across the entire tree.

Every skill now has three ranks, stronger abilities are unlocked through connected prerequisites, and several skills have new effects or synergies. Existing saves also have their spent skill points refunded when moving into Remastered.

Best Skills in The Witcher 3 Remastered

For a general-purpose build, these are the skills we recommend prioritizing:

SkillWhy It’s Good
Razor FocusStarts combat with an Adrenaline Point and improves Adrenaline generation, which synergizes heavily with other skills.
Strength TrainingMixing Fast and Strong Attacks gives free extra damage.
Muscle MemoryBoosts Fast Attack damage after dodges or rolls, for some easy extra early game damage.
UndyingConverts Adrenaline into emergency healing when Geralt would otherwise die.
RendDeliver a decisive heavy blow that ignores enemy defense and deals more damage for each Adrenaline point.
Exploding ShieldPushes enemies back when Quen breaks, giving you space to reposition or recast.
Active ShieldTurns Quen into a defensive healing tool by restoring Vitality while absorbing damage.
SidestepReduces the Stamina cost of Quen after dodging or rolling, making defensive Sign loops much smoother.
Shock WaveGives Aard decent damage scaling and makes Aard-focused builds far stronger in Remastered.
ResonanceConverts high Sign Intensity into extra melee damage after casting a Sign, which is perfect for hybrid builds.
RefreshmentMakes every potion restore Vitality in addition to its normal effect.
Protective CoatingReduces damage from monster types that match the oil currently applied to your sword.
Poisoned BladesAdds poison chance to attacks when using the correct blade oil.
Anger ManagementLets Geralt spend Adrenaline to cast Signs when Stamina is unavailable.
Adrenaline BurstImproves Adrenaline generation and Signs can also generate Adrenaline.

If you are starting a new playthrough, you do not need to chase all of these immediately. Muscle Memory or Strength Training, Razor Focus, Exploding Shield, and Refreshment are all good for the early game. We’ll explore the best early-game skills further ahead in the guide.

With the skills we have recommended, you can either opt for a 2x Combat, 1x Sign, and 1x Alchemy build like the image below or you can go all-in on hybrid combat and go for 2x Combat and 2x Sign.

Best Early Skills to Unlock First

If you are starting from Level 1, we recommend prioritizing these skills before worrying about an optimized endgame build:

  1. Muscle Memory or Strength Training
  2. Razor Focus
  3. Exploding Shield
  4. Far-Reaching Aard or Melt Armor
  5. Refreshment
  6. Poisoned Blades
  7. Protective Coating

Do not try to invest into Combat, Signs, and Alchemy all at once, you won’t have the points. Start with one reliable sword path, add Quen for defense, choose Aard or Igni as your main offensive Sign, and then use Alchemy to improve healing and monster preparation.

You can start specializing once additional skill slots and points become available.

Aard or Igni Which Should You Upgrade?

Both are good in The Witcher 3 Remastered, but they’re meant for different playstyles/roles.

Aard is the better investment if you want crowd control and eventually plan to build around Sign damage. The combination of Far-Reaching Aard, Aard Sweep, and Shock Wave gives it considerably more offensive potential than it had before.

Igni requires less investment to deal damage and work with a sword build. Melt Armor lets you weaken tougher enemies before immediately returning to melee, making it an easy fit in Combat-heavy setups without needing much investment.

Best General Skills in The Witcher 3 Remastered

The General tree contains some of the strongest cross-tree synergies in Remastered. These skills are core for hybrid builds because they connect Adrenaline, Signs, armor types, and non-physical damage.

Anger Management

Anger Management is one of the best bridge skills between Combat and Signs. A sword build generating plenty of Adrenaline can convert that resource into extra Sign casts, and at higher ranks the cost becomes much easier to sustain.

Adrenaline Burst

Adrenaline Burst pairs naturally with Anger Management because it lets Signs contribute to Adrenaline generation instead of only consuming resources. Together, the two skills create a much smoother loop for Combat/Sign hybrids.

Elemental Attunement

Elemental Attunement is excellent for builds that deal several forms of non-physical damage. Igni, Aard, poison, bombs, and other elemental effects can all benefit, making it great in Sign/Alchemy hybrid builds.

Wolf School Techniques

Wolf School Techniques is one of the best choices for a balanced Combat/Sign build. If you regularly alternate between sword attacks and Signs, its bonuses fit that playstyle better than specializing entirely into either side.

Cat School Techniques

Cat School Techniques is the natural choice for builds or playstyles that spam fast attacks. It pairs particularly well with Muscle Memory and other Combat skills that reward quick, repeated attacks.

Bear School Techniques

Bear School Techniques works best with Strong Attack and durability-focused builds. Pair it with Strength Training, Sunder Armor, and Rend if you prefer slower but much heavier hits.

Griffin School Techniques

Griffin School Techniques is the strongest straightforward choice for dedicated Sign builds. It gives a lot of value when paired with high Sign Intensity and skills such as Resonance that turn that investment back into melee damage.

How to Reset Skills in The Witcher 3 Remastered

If you want to change your build, use a Potion of Clearance to refund your spent Ability Points and redistribute them. Returning saves also have their previously allocated skill points refunded when first moved into Remastered. So, there is no reason to be afraid of experimenting with different builds, especially once Potions of Clearance become easy to buy. If a skill or playstyle is not working for you, reset the tree and rebuild around the playstyle and gear you actually use.
