Best Build Order for New Players in Age of Mythology: Retold

First and foremost, let’s be completely honest: there isn’t a single go-to build order in Age of Mythology: Retold. It depends on the map, play style, faction, and opponent—so many factors that will completely change how you play each round. For now, here’s an excellent starting point:

  • 5 villagers to food
  • 3 villagers to wood
  • 2 villagers to gold
  • Build a house when you have the resources
  • Build a temple when you have the resources

From here, you’ll repurpose your villagers and construction depending on your plans. If you intend to dominate the map militarily, you’ll require wood for your army. To expand to a second town, you need gold and food.

  • Take your time in selecting your preferred God in Age of Mythology: Retold. For new players, we recommend starting with the Greeks, as they offer potent military units. But test out each one against the AI to find a play style that suits you.
  • The starting point—the Archaic Age—primarily revolves around gathering resources. You’ll want to rush the Classical Age and start contemplating your strategy for dominating the map.
  • While winning a game using military might is fun, don’t ignore your economy. You must keep producing villagers until the game ends and assign them to the resources you need most. You can always move them later!
