Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) – Rescue the Trapped Man Quest Walkthrough

The primary objective of the Rescue the Trapped Man quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to find Benryn in Waukeen’s Rest, escape the burning building, and locate his dowry afterwards.

Since the building is actively burning during your trip here, you’ll have limited time before the fire engulfs the home, Benryn, and anything else inside. Your best bet is to use Turn-Based mode during this quest until you’re safe and away from the flames, or else you risk Benryn or your characters getting caught in the fire.

Tip:

Make sure you have a character with high investigative or strength stats to help you save Benryn from the fire. Skills like Shadowheart’s Guidance will also provide valuable buffs to help you succeed in the dice roll.

How to Find Benryn

Upon arriving at Waukeen’s Rest, go directly west of the fountain into the burning building at coordinates (X: -77, Y: 601) and ascend the stairs. After breaking the door into the north building, you’ll find Benryn covered in fallen debris on the floor. Interact with Benryn and use the Strength or Investigation check to lift the wood off him.

Escaping the Burning Building

After clearing the debris away from Benryn, it’s time to make your escape. Head back through the way you came until Benryn noticed Miri, his deceased wife. After discussing the situation, he’ll mention a dowry, which you can ask about to progress through the quest.

From here, you have multiple choices:

  1. Be a good Samaritan and return the dowry.
  2. Find the dowry and sell it.
  3. Leave and ignore his wishes.
Tip:

If you choose to locate the dowry, be prepared to pass a Perception check. It’s wise to create a new save slot here in case you fail the check and wish to retry.

Locating Benryn’s Dowry

If you choose to find the dowry to return to Benryn, you must head downstairs and west into the barn at coordinates (X: -99, Y: 617). Inside, you’ll find a haystack; interact with it and pass the Perception check to spot a Gilded chest with the dowry inside.

Should You Return the Dowry to Benryn?

It’s up to you whether you return or keep Benryn’s dowry. You can even sell it to make some money. Keeping it will cause Benryn to be angry, but aside from this, he won’t attack you or cause any significant short-term problems. Similarly, you won’t receive any immediate rewards for giving him the dowry, but he’ll express his gratitude before mourning over Miri’s death.
