What Are Icy Crystal, Icy Metal, and Icy Helve in Baldur’s Gate 3?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are three materials called Icy Crystal, Icy Metal, and Icy Helve, which you can collect to make the Mourning Frost Staff. This staff is a powerful weapon that is perfect for players who prefer to use cold spells in the game. However, you can only find one of each material in the game, and you need all three to craft the staff.

What is the Mourning Frost?

The Mourning Frost in BG3 is a Very Rare Quarterstaff. It focuses on dealing Cold damage, allowing you to inflict the Chilled status, which will reduce your target’s movement speed. It’s the only Quarterstaff of its rarity that you’ll find in Act 1 of BG3, making it one of the more valuable staves early in the game.

Mourning Frost Stats

  • Weapon Enchantment: +1.
  • Damage: 1D8 (1d6)+1 +Strength modifier Bludgeoning.
    • Extra Damage: +1d4 Cold.
  • Heart of Ice: When dealing Cold damage, the wielder deals an additional 1 Cold damage.
  • Insidious Cold: Dealing Cold damage with a spell possibly inflicts Chilled upon the target.
  • Special Skill: Ray of Frost.
  • Weapon Proficiency Actions: Topple.
  • Versatile: Wield with one or both hands.

Items to Craft Mourning Frost in BG3

To craft Mourning Frost in BG3, you need three separate items: Icy Metal, Icy Crystal, and Icy Heave. You can find all three of these items while exploring the Underdark.

If you plan on exploring the Underdark in the future, it’s crucial to be wary of the Bibberbang’s proximity trap. Anticipating and avoiding this trap could mean the difference between success and failure in your journey.

Where is Icy Crystal in BG3?

The Icy Crystal can be found on Filro the Forgotten, near the Sussur Tree waypoint. His pet Hook Horrors defends him, so make sure you come prepared. There is no way to avoid fighting Filro, so defeat him quickly and loot his remains to acquire the Icy Crystal.

Where is Icy Metal in BG3?

To find the Icy Metal in BG3, you need to make your way to the Myconid Circle and speak to Spaw. Agree to help him and then head out to the Underdark – Beach. Defeat the Duegar here and then return to Spaw to complete the quest. In return, he will open the Gnarled Door. The dead Drow beyond the door has the Icy Metal in his inventory.

Where is Icy Heave in BG3?

To acquire the Icy Heave, you must head west of the Selunite Outpost. Here, you will find several petrified Drow and be ambushed by a Spectator. Win the fight and quickly pickpocket Dhourn (or loot him if he dies in the fight). He will have the Icy Heave in his possession.

How to Craft Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3

Once you have the Icy Crystal, Icy Metal, and Icy Heave, open your inventory, select one of the parts, and choose Combine. Drag all three of the Icy materials into their slots and hit combine. This will create the Mourning Frost staff and allow you to make the most of slinging icy spells.
