The Temple of Bhaal is finally open, and after defeating Serevok Anchev in the crypt, it’s time to battle against Orin in Baldur’s Gate 3. As one of the deadliest assassins in the entire game, Orin is unlikely to give up the Netherstone easily, but we can help you get past the defenses she gets from her God.
How to Defeat Orin in Baldur’s Gate 3
You need to break Orin’s Unstoppable barrier using multiple attacks like Magic Missiles and have your party focus on her to beat the servant of Bhaal. However, when you break through her Unstoppable barrier, you will have one turn with your party to dish out some damage before the entire barrier returns. There is also an entire ritual happening at the base of the alter, which makes each turn even more crucial.
Orin’s Unstoppable barrier is the main obstacle you’ll have to contend with. The Unstoppable condition reduces the damage taken by the entity to one and consumes one charge of Unstoppable. Unstoppable creatures cannot be moved by any external forces—mundane or magical.
Orin the Red has seven charges of Unstoppable in Baldur’s Gate 3. That means she can absorb up to seven hits that will only deal one damage each time. So even if you hit the boss with a 40-damage attack, only one hit point will count. So throwing out as many attacks as you can is important.
How to Break Orin’s Unstoppable Barrier in BG3
We suggest saving your action surges and your Magic Missiles spells for the start of the fight. Get in as many hits as you can with low-damage attacks. A level 5 Magic Missiles spell can break the entire barrier. But keep in mind that you have one turn before the barrier regenerates.
When you break the barrier, dump all of the most powerful abilities on each of your characters. Bringing along a fighter like Lae’zel (assuming she’s not the one kidnapped) will be very helpful here. A fighter with Action Surge can get in six hits on Orin. This will likely kill her if the barrier is fully down, or otherwise nearly take down the whole barrier.
You can also use Shadowheart’s Harm spell to reduce Orin’s maximum HP while the Unstoppable barrier is still up. Harm can reduce Orin’s HP to nearly half (if you’re lucky), ensuring she goes down in one turn by a fighter with Action Surge.
If you can kill Orin fast enough, her Unstoppable barrier won’t be reapplied by Bhaal, and the ritual will fail. That means you get your Netherstone, and you can save your captured companion in the process.
How to Defeat Orin’s Cultists of Bhaal Minions
Alternatively, you can try to take out Orin’s minions first to get rid of Orin’s Unstoppable boon for the duration of the fight, but it may require more finesse than its worth.
Each one of Orin’s minions taking a part in the ritual have the Sanctuary condition active, making them immune to direct hits. They can, however, take splash damage, meaning you can use AOE attacks to take them down. Thunderwave is particularly effective at this as it has the added benefit of pushing its targets over the edge of the platform. Force Tunnel will also knock a few chumps down, and Circle of Death is another good spell to bring down several ritualists at once as long as you don’t mind your companions possibly taking some of the damage as well (watch out for your helpless captured companion lying on the alter table).
After the first turn ends, Orin will start casting Let the Slaughter Begin, marking each ritualist with the Bhaal’s Murderous Mark condition if they don’t succeed a save check. This condition lasts for two turns and will add +1 to Orin’s AC bonus upon the affected ritualist’s death. You can see which minions are marked with this condition underneath their individual health bars. Avoid killing these marked minions to save yourself from a major headache.
Once all ritualists have been taken care of, you won’t have to worry about Unstoppable recharging, allowing you to tackle Orin in any way you like. Orin can, however, use Sanguine Animation to make additional skeletal minions from the ritualists’ bodies. You may have to deal with these guys, but they won’t add to Orin’s Unstoppable Charge.
Once all is said and done, Orin will melt into a gore pile, and you’ll be able to move on.
Orin the Red’s Stats in BG3
Orin’s Slayer form in Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t actually all that impressive. You’ll find she goes down pretty easily once her Unstoppable boon is taken care of and you don’t accidently kill anyone marked with Bhaals Murderous Mark. Her stats are as follows:
- Level: 12.
- HP: 131.
- AC: 18.
- STR: 22.
- DEX: 14.
- CON: 17.
- INT: 14.
- WIS: 16.
- CHA: 19.
- Speed: 9m.
- No resistances.
Orin can hit hard, especially with her Multiattack. But she’s quite soft. Many useful spells like Harm and Command also have a fair chance of hitting, unlike with most tough enemies. However, Orin does have Evasion, which means she’ll dodge and take only half damage from certain spells.
Orin’s Attacks and Abilities in BG3
Orin has five attacks you’ll need to watch out for:
- Piercing Growl: 3d8+4 Piercing damage—a cone attack that inflicts Bleeding and Fear on failed Constitution saves.
- Relentless Lunge: 2d6+6 Bludgeoning damage—a leap attack that knocks creatures Prone on failed Strength saves.
- Multiattack: 4d4 Slashing damage—a 4-hit claw attack.
- Sumptuous Blood Bath: 3d10 Slashing damage—inflicts bleeding on failed Constitution saves.
- Sanguine Animation: Orin will create skeletal minions from corpse piles to join in the fight.
And some of Orin’s notable abilities include
- Evasion: Orin will dodge out of the way of certain spells. When a spell or effect would deal half damage on a successful Dexterity saving throw, it deals no damage if she succeeds, and only half damage if she fails.
- Fast Hands: Orin gains an additional bonus action.
- Immutable Form: Spells that affect someone’s form have no effect, and Orin has +5 bonus to saving throws against spells that would remove her from this plane.
Where to find Orin in BG3
To find Orin in BG3, you first need to obtain the amulet of Bhaal from Sarevok Anchev in the Bhaalist Crypt through Candulhallow’s Tombstones (coordinates X:74, Y:26). Once you have this amulet, you’ll be able to access the Undercity Ruins in the sewers (coordinates X:-142, Y:934).
At the Undercity Ruins waypoint, there will be a large stone door straight ahead of you. Interact with the door, show the amulet of Bhaal, and then you’ll be asked how you’ve proven yourself in the Dread Lord’s eyes. If you chose to fight Sarevok Anchev, you can say that you slaughtered the Murder Tribunal to gain access. If you let Sarevok baptize you, tell the door you were baptized as an unholy assassin. If you’re telling the truth, the door will open up, and you’ll be able to proceed into the ruins.
Once the Undercity Ruins door is open, you’ll have to follow the path downward. You’ll be briefly interrupted by a trial of sorts that requires you to get rid of a ghost called the Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev while several humanoid enemies attack you from mostly high up with ranged attacks. Having far-ranged AOE attacks will be very helpful here as these enemies like to group up in small clusters around the cliffsides and ruins of the room.
But you’ll want to primarily focus on getting to and attacking the Farslayer. The Farslayer will begin a chant at the start of the trial that will allow it to cast Bhaal’s Power Word Kill at the end of seven turns. This enchantment will insta-kill any of your party members with HP lower than 100.
The Farslayer is protected by five charges of Unstoppable. This means you’ll have to hit him at least five times before you can start doing meaningful damage to him. He’s resistant to slashing, piercing, bludgeoning, acid, thunder, necrotic, fire, lightning, cold, and poison, and has 47 hit points. He sounds tough, but in actuality, he went down within a couple hits of Karlach’s sword in our playthrough once his Unstoppable charges were depleted. He’s much squishier than he appears to be. Just make sure you get to him as fast as you can and get off as many hits as possible with each turn.
Once the Farslayer is dealt with, all the other enemies will run off. You’ll then want to make your way to a metal door to the right of an entryway near where the Farslayer stood chanting. Go through it and down several stairs; eventually you’ll arrive at the Ancient Sigil Circle waypoint in the Temple of Bhaal. This will be your last chance to heal up and make any necessary party changes before taking on Orin.
Straight ahead down the bridge are a pair of large sturdy doors. When you interact with them, you’ll be given the option to press the amulet to the door. Do this, and your way into Bhaal Temple will open. Orin will be waiting for you just down some stairs on the circular platform below.
