Why Did Sony Reveal the PS5 DualSense Controller First?

While we've gotten an extensive first look at the Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 system is still a huge mystery ... but at least we have the PS5 DualSense controller to look at?
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Last year during The Game Awards 2019, the world got its first look at the Xbox Series X in all of its refrigerator glory but we’ve yet to see what the PlayStation 5 looks like. We did, however, get our first look at the PS5 DualSense controller, but Sony fans want to know: what the heck does the system look like?

Why did Sony reveal the PS5 DualSense controller first?

According to a report from Bloomberg that laid out the production issues the PlayStation 5 is currently facing due to COVID-19, the reveal order was also explained. In the report, the site mentioned that PlayStation 5 will launch with much fewer consoles than that of the PlayStation 4 due to production disruptions that the Tokyo-based company is facing. Though Sony did reveal the specs of the next generation of gaming, many fans were frustrated that we had numbers but no actual reveal, especially with the Xbox camp being so forthcoming about what’s ahead.

COVID-19 has upended many company’s promotional plans and that includes Sony when detailing the marketing for the PlayStation 5. Since the pandemic’s declaration, the PlayStation camp has had to halt their press conference activations, instead being forced into an all-digital format with the rest of the world. This was also the reason for the PS5 DualSense’s random reveal, that showcase was done in “a hurried fashion,” according to inside sources within the company.

The report also mentioned that Sony has told assembly partners that they were looking to make 5 million units, 6 tops, which is down from the 7.5 million units shipped when the PlayStation4 launched. The price range was also mentioned, setting the next generation between $499-$549, though the increased component cost could negatively impact that range in terms of consumption.

That being said, Sony has mentioned that, at this time, there are no delay plans when it comes to launching the next generation of gaming, it just means that the PS5’s revelations will be very different than its generational predecessor. With pandemic’s continued spread, a delay still isn’t completely out of the question, but Sony – like the rest of the world – is paying special attention to world events to determine the next steps.
