According to a report from Digital Trends, Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer is somewhere in the process of producing a Jak and Daxter movie adaptation. This anecdote came from an interview conducted by the outlet as part of Uncharted’s marketing outreach.
Speaking to Digital Trends, Fleischer said, “I’m actually working on Jak and Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation, which I think would be really cool to bring to life.” There is no further information in the report. And when it comes to the movie-making business, “working on” could mean a whole lot of different things. This project could be in some early state of pre-production, or it could still be at the infant stage of coming up with a treatment to pitch. Or anything in-between. Or, you know, something else.

To speculate for a moment, I imagine a lot of this is riding on how things go with the Uncharted movie. This is the first release from “PlayStation Productions,” but it isn’t the first PlayStation-adjacent movie to release. Ratchet and Clank was released in theaters alongside a critical darling of a videogame adaptation. Unfortunately, the movie itself bombed. A couple of planned Sly Cooper projects, one being a movie from the same studio, seem to have been quietly canceled. Not a great batting average, especially considering how closely associated the Ratchet and Jak series often are by fans.
PlayStation Productions’ other upcoming projects are based on The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima, much more in line with Sony’s “prestige” gaming brand. Jak and Daxter would be taking things back to animation, which could very well be a big hurdle for Fleischer. But again, speculation!
