There Might Still Be Hope For Physical Discs From Sony

Sony might not be fully committed to axing physical media yet.

Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games in 2028 didn’t sit well with a sizable amount of the fanbase. However, there may still be some hope for physical releases, with new reports suggesting the situation might not be as final as it first appeared.

Leaker Moore’s Law is Dead claimed that his trusted sources have revealed that Sony has reportedly been asking developers about the possibility of changing its approach to physical media.

He mentions that, “there is a survey Sony sent out to developers. That’s what I was told by my contacts: a bigger survey than they’ve sent almost ever before, if not ever before“. Not only is the survey quite sizable, but he also mentions that they almost directly allude to the topic of killing discs: “There was a question in it asking, basically trying to ask in a not-direct way, ‘Is there an issue with how we sell games physically?

While this doesn’t mean that Sony is going to be reversing its plans, it does show that the company is very much aware of the problems and is still listening with open ears. While it might not be much, it’s a lot better than accepting the end of physical media just like that, and we hope it turns out to be true.

Sony originally announced that it would stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. The company said the move was based on changing consumer habits, with digital purchases becoming a much larger part of game sales. Games that are already released, or planned to launch physically before that deadline, will not be affected.

The situation becomes a bit more hopeful after confusion around Sony’s disc manufacturing plans was cleared up. Early reports suggested Sony DADC’s disc production could fall to just 10% of current levels. However, Sony DADC later clarified that the number was misunderstood and the company expects an overall production decline of around 10%.

Again, that doesn’t mean new PlayStation games will be getting their disc releases after the deadline passes. But it does mean Sony will still have the manufacturing capability to produce physical media, including reprints and releases for older titles.

The backlash from players has mostly focused on ownership and preservation. Physical games can be traded, resold, borrowed, and kept without relying entirely on digital storefronts. Those concerns have become louder as more companies move toward digital-only libraries. This backlash has given rival Xbox a chance to dunk on Sony in the world of PR.

For now, Sony’s 2028 plan remains unchanged. But between developer feedback, continued manufacturing capacity, and strong backlash from gamers, maybe we can all still hold some hope about the future of Sony and physical media.
