RGG Studio has largely been known as the “Yakuza studio” for years, with an almost annual release schedule, but it’s expanding its portfolio with Stranger Than Heaven and Virtua Fighter Crossroads. Today, SEGA and RGG Studio announced that Stranger Than Heaven is now the studio’s most wishlisted game of all time.

Stranger Than Heaven Has Already Broken an RGG Studio Record

Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming action-adventure title from RGG Studio, is now the studio’s most wishlisted game of all time, surpassing one million wishlists across all platforms.

While the Yakuza series has finally garnered mainstream appeal, its lengthy history can make it a real commitment for newcomers, with several titles spanning generations, re-releases, and spin-offs. Stranger Than Heaven, on the other hand, is a brand-new IP that could be the perfect entry point into RGG Studio’s distinct design sensibilities if you’re overwhelmed by their existing franchises.

Stranger Than Heaven spans a 50-year saga, putting you in the shoes of Makoto Daito as you follow his journey through five cities across five eras. It also features a unique combat system where you control Makoto’s left and right sides independently as you brawl with a variety of thugs across the decades.

Stranger Than Heaven Release Date

Stranger Than Heaven is launching on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X on January 15, 2027. It’s also coming day one to Xbox Game Pass.

You can pre-order it now across all platforms and choose from multiple editions.

Over a million wishlists is no small feat, especially for a new IP, but RGG Studio has worked hard over the last few years to cement its unique identity among its peers, focusing on high-stakes drama, human connection, and over-the-top action. Stranger Than Heaven isn’t connected to Yakuza in any way, but it still carries RGG’s signature feel, with detailed and authentic locations, stylish designs, streets packed with NPCs, and larger-than-life characters to interact with. I’m excited to see how far the studio takes the showman and musical elements of the game and what new surprises its combat system has in store for us.
