Unlike most major AAA releases, RGG Studio has opted for a single audio track for Stranger Than Heaven, as language is closely tied to the narrative. Makoto Daito is half-Japanese and half-American, and his sense of not belonging to either country is reflected in how he communicates. English is his first language, while Japanese is his second. To preserve this aspect of his character, RGG has combined English and Japanese dialogue, with subtitles available in multiple languages for localization.
Speaking in an interview with UnGeek, RGG Studio explained that a traditional dub would not have worked for the character. “If you have a person that’s trying to pick up a new language and trying to dub that with a perfect Japanese actor, then that really doesn’t match,” the studio said, explaining that this is why Stranger Than Heaven uses a mixed, or rather “one voice selection.”
Personally, I’m a big fan of this decision, and I think asking players to rely on subtitles is perfectly reasonable, especially for a game like this, which will clearly have a major narrative focus, much like RGG Studio’s previous works, but with the language aspect directly tied to it.
Like their previous titles, the cast is massive, and the character models shown off so far are incredibly detailed. These aren’t just random NPCs, but fully voiced and performed side characters that you’ll actually get to know and form connections with throughout the game.
