You Can Turn Off Letterboxing in Silent Hill: Townfall

Every trailer Screen Burn and Konami have shared for Silent Hill: Townfall, whether showing cutscenes or gameplay, has been presented with letterboxing enabled. This led many people to assume the game would use the same cinematic presentation by default.

However, Screen Burn confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that players can disable letterboxing during gameplay in Silent Hill: Townfall. However, cutscenes will still use letterboxing.

The studio also confirmed that Silent Hill: Townfall fully supports ultrawide displays, which is the aspect ratio the game was designed for. If you’re playing in ultrawide, you won’t see letterboxing at all. This also explains why the game’s cutscenes appear letterboxed on standard displays, as they’re framed for the wider aspect ratio the team designed the game around.

It’s great to see the developers address this ahead of release. I’m not sure whether the team is referring specifically to the PC version, or if the option to disable letterboxing will also be available on consoles. Plenty of console releases over the years have used letterboxing, though they often don’t offer an option to switch to fullscreen. Since the team didn’t specify which platforms this applies to, the toggle may be available on both.

Personally, I’m glad gameplay can be played in fullscreen, though I’m not entirely opposed to letterboxed gameplay when it’s done well, which does seem to be the case with Silent Hill: Townfall. Plus, I don’t really want the game’s presentation switching between aspect ratios as it transitions from gameplay to cutscenes and vice versa. I’m not watching The Dark Knight Rises.

Since this is an Unreal Engine 5 title, though, I’m pretty sure we’ll see a mod that removes letterboxing from the cutscenes on day one for the PC version.

Will you be playing Silent Hill: Townfall in letterboxed presentation or not? Let me know in the comments below.
