A modification to Borderlands 2 is destroying the saves of anyone who plays against gamers that have enabled it, Gearbox has revealed.
A patch has already been sent to Microsoft and is awaiting approval but for the time being Gearbox has advised those playing online to stick to playing with friends you’re sure haven’t used the mod.
The mod itself is known as the “Graveyard” exploit and opens up a hidden hardcore mode much like the perma-death option in Diablo 3. Gearbox has been referring to the incident as “sabotage”.
“Recently a few users have begun violating the Xbox Live Code of Conduct by using an external application to maliciously disrupt the experience and sabotage characters of legitimate Borderlands 2 players on Xbox 360,” Gearbox community manager Chris Faylor explained over at the Borderlands 2 official forum. “Fortunately it’s easy to avoid this scenario.
“After extensive internal testing, an update to prevent this disruption has been submitted to Microsoft and will be released as soon as possible. Until then, concerned Xbox 360 players of Borderlands 2 should consider playing online with trusted individuals in non-public sessions. This does not affect players on PC or PlayStation 3.”
Borderlands 2 players have been advised that it’s best to end sessions via the Save and Quit option found in the in-game pause menu. If you’re playing and end up on the Borderlands 2 main menu after dying, make sure you select Continue to resume playing or you’re likely to lose your save.
“We ask that players report any suspicious behavior in Borderlands 2 to [email protected] and provide as much details and documentation of their disrupted experience as possible to assist us in our investigation,” said Faylor.
