Rocket League Now Supports Full Cross-Platform Play

by Larryn Bell

Full cross-platform play is now live in Rocket League, according to an announcement today from developer Psyonix. Starting today, January 14, Rocket League is now a part of the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program, which was the last step toward enabling full cross-play functionality for players on all platforms where Rocket League is available.

Rocket League players can now matchmake with other players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC in every game mode. This should greatly expand the matchmaking pool for everyone on the car-based soccer game, allowing for more players to quickly find matches regardless of platform.

Cross-platform play should be enabled by default, but if you want to ensure you have cross-play enabled in Rocket League, simply select Options from the Main Menu screen and make sure the “Cross-Platform Play” box is check marked under Gameplay. Likewise, you can uncheck this box if you want to limit matchmaking to players who are on the same platform as you.

While cross-play is a great feature to have for matchmaking in general, one of the biggest draws of this feature is being able to party and team up with friends who are on different platforms. Although cross-play parties are inevitable, Psyonix clarified that this feature is still in the works. “In our first update this year (more information coming soon), we will release our cross-platform party system, which allows you to partner up with friends on any platform with the push of a few buttons.”

Those who want to cross-play with friends in Rocket League before the official update can do so in private matches instead. Simply navigate to the Main Menu and press Play, then create and join a Private Match.
