After a lot of teasing on Twitter by Ed Boon, the author of the Mortal Kombat series, we finally got an announcement for the next installment of the legendary fighting franchise, and it seems instead of Mortal Kombat 12, we’ll be getting Mortal Kombat 1!
Mortal Kombat 12 Announced as Mortal Kombat 1
As the name suggests, it is a reboot of the well-known Mortal Kombat story, but as you can see in the announcement trailer below, the presence of Liu Kang as a God confirms that the original storyline from the end of Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath continues here.

When Does Mortal Kombat 1 Come Out?
In addition to the Announcement Trailer, the official Mortal Kombat website just got updated with a lot of information regarding the new game, including the release date and pre-order details. Mortal Kombat 1 arrives on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Pre-orders that will include a bonus playable Shang-Tsung character will be available from May 19. Also, players on PlayStation and Xbox will get access to the beta version in August.

Mortal Kombat 1 promises an immersive story campaign in a brand new universe shaped by the god-mode Liu Kang, featuring your favorite Mortal Kombat characters like you’ve never seen them before including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. There is also mention of a new Kameo Fighters system with an additional roster of characters that can assist players in battle – think KOF strikers system.
We are very excited for a new Mortal Kombat, as 2023 is shaping out to be a great time for fighters with upcoming titles like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 also arriving this year.
