Though not a Final Fantasy crossover, famed artist Yoshitaka Amano did lend his special creative talents to a new card in the upcoming War of the Spark Magic the Gathering expansion. Wizards of the Coast wanted to add a creative spin to the upcoming deck, including special versions to make their way to Japan. One of those alternates was created by the Final Fantasy artist, and it’s absolutely beautiful.
Amano provided his talents for the variant of the Liliana, Dreadhorde General card for War of the Spark. Liliana is a planeswalker who can create zombies at will to wreck absolute chaos on the world, bringing with her death, destruction, and pure mayhem. Amano’s take on the frightful character drips her in royalty with hues of blues and purples, but careful to remain true to the theme of death with paled shadings and her lily white features.
Not all of the cards in the upcoming expansion will have Japanese alternates, but the ones that will can be seen here. According to the latest post from Wizards of the Coast, “These alternate versions appear randomly in Japanese-language War of the Spark boosters, replacing the regular version of the planeswalker in the pack 50% of the time. We’ve made Japanese boosters available to retailers around the world, so you can find them nearby wherever you live.”
For more about the upcoming expansion for Magic the Gathering:
“Nicol Bolas controls Ravnica. His army of Eternals run free and the guilds have descended into chaos. Now only the combined power of the Planeswalkers stands between Bolas and total dominance over the Multiverse. It’s all-out war.
“War of the Spark–the most ambitious Magic: The Gathering card set ever–features 36 Planeswalker cards and a cinematic story experience unlike anything Magic fans have seen before. Everything is at stake.”
