Injustice: Gods Among Us – Getting To Know the Newer Characters (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U)

We look at Doomsday, Bane and other additions to the powerhouse superhero/villain fighting game.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is the DC Comics’ inspired brawlathon from Mortal Kombat creators Netherrealm Studios.  And unlike Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (which came out a few years ago), this newer fighter focuses more on the abilities of each of the heroes and villains included in the game.

There’s already a wide assortment of characters to choose from, including iconic favorites like Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman, as well as other additions like Cyborg, Deathstroke, Solomon Grundy and Green Arrow.  So you’ll no doubt find someone that you can adapt to and master over the course of time – which is important considering the online gameplay that’ll be involved.  (Get ready for some monstrous challenges in the months ahead.)

Some new characters have recently joined the fray, and since we like covering every aspect of what Injustice has to offer, we thought we’d take a look at them individually, seeing just what they’re capable of when it comes to pounding their opponents into pudding.

Let’s get to brawlin’!

Bane

With his introduction in the Dark Knight film series last year, people are probably expecting the suave muscle-bound villain.  But Injustice’s take is more along the lines of the tubed freak that was first introduced in the comics, complete with a full facial mask and muscles that can be pumped up on command.  Don’t worry, he’s still capable of breaking Batman’s back as if it were a twig, but his increased strength also gives him a number of moves to his advantage.  Not only can he take items out of the environment (for instance, cars) to smash enemies with, but he can also utilize a number of throws, as well as strong punches and kicks.  Get in his range and, well, you’re likely to be broken easily.  Plus, you don’t have to worry about his speech getting too muffled when he pronounces his victory.

Deathstroke

Whatever you do, don’t call this guy Deadpool.  This assassin for hire isn’t in the mood for jokes, and is probably a little sore that he’s settled in as a secondary character for Injustice, rather than getting a full-fledged effort like that “other guy” is for Activision.  But don’t be fooled – Deathstroke is all business.  Using a number of his skills and weapons, he easily lays waste to any opponent that’s in front of him, big or small.  He’s also very quick on his feet, able to link together a number of combos with ease, between close strikes and his guns.  His sword is also quite useful on occasion, enabling him to knock enemies through platforms and walls.  And his finisher is a combination of shots and stabs that very few will recover from.

Doomsday

Yes, the ultra villain is getting his own turn in Injustice: Gods Among Us, but he’s ditching his costume in favor of a full-grown brute look, supercharging himself and preparing for a fight.  With his size, he’s able to level enemies quit easily between ground and air strikes, while also occasionally throwing projectiles that can knock them back for a loop.  He can also chain together combos quite easily, as he’s a lot speedier than he appears.  And his finisher is something else, as he pounds enemies deep within the ground, only to knock them right back up to the surface, taunting them after he makes his return.  His voice is quite intimidating as well.  “RAWRRRR!”

Lex Luthor

At first, this supervillain might not sound as intimidating as, say, Doomsay.  But when you realize he’s wearing the same armored suit he donned in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Lex Luthor is quite a force to be reckoned with.  Utilizing a number of mechanical abilities and weapons, he can whip even the mightiest of heroes into shape, between powerful throws, projectiles and combos.  And for his super, he can easily lob an opponent outside of the building, where they’ll run into damaging debris that will throw them for a loop.  Don’t be fooled by Lex Luthor’s size in the beginning of the game – he gets a lot tougher the moment he dresses up for the fight.

Shazam

Finally, we have Shazam, who, at first, appears to be a rather weak kid when he enters the fray.  But once he begins his transformation, he’s just as powerful as Superman and his other allies, using projectile firings, throws and thunderous punches to send them into the middle of next month.  He can also teleport rather easily, enabling him to get behind opponents and counter-strike with ease.  As for his super technique, he’ll launch an enemy into the air in the midst of a thunderstorm, pummel ’em good, and send them crashing right down to the planet.
