Hollow Knight – The GTA of Metroidvania Titles? (Release Date Confirmed)

It's actually happening.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is actually coming in 2025, and I can hardly even believe that phrase as I type it. We actually got Silksong before GTA6 – well, if all goes to plan. But speaking of GTA6 and the fear it instills in game developers the world over, it got me thinking… Silksong has kinda become the GTA of metroidvanias.

This follows an announcement by Aeternum Game Studios in which they delayed their hotly anticipated follow-up to Aeterna Noctis for no other reason than to avoid competition with Silksong.

The sequel, Aeterna Lucis, has now officially been pushed to 2026 after Silksong’s official launch announcement at gamescom. Hollow Knight: Silksong will release on Sep. 4, 2025, the same month in which we would have gotten Lucis, and that’s just around the corner.

It’s weird to think back to that obscure little metroidvania, Hollow Knight, and the first time I played it. I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the beautifully-paced challenge. I didn’t realize just how big it would get, though.

If you told me back then that the launch of its sequel would cause other games to make way, I’d have probably laughed at you. But after selling upwards of 15 million units, Hollow Knight became a global hit.

We’ve been waiting a damn long time for Silksong – six years, more or less – and now the time has finally come.

It’s scary, in a way. What if we’ve had all this anticipation, all this hype, only to be met with bitter disappointment? Thankfully, the chances of that are slim, because Team Cherry is an indie developer driven by passion, not profit (or at least, so it appears). So we’re more than likely in for one heck of an adventure.

I’ll see you there.

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
