With only a few days left until release day, the first reviews for Hogwarts Legacy have been unveiled, with the upcoming RPG set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 10, 2023. The highly anticipated prequel set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has had a development process more tumultuous than a ride in the Weasley’s flying car with Ron at the wheel. The game faced numerous delays, controversy due to association with author J.K. Rowling, doubts of whether Avalanche Software was capable to create an RPG of this magnitude, and even some staffing problems, such as the departure of the lead designer late in the development process. So, was Hogwarts Legacy able to overcome its turbulent beginnings and live up to gamers’ high expectations? Let’s take a look at how critics rated Hogwarts Legacy and where the newest entry ranks in the long line of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter-related titles.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Critic Scores Compared to Previous Wizarding World Games

Hogwarts Legacy has long been considered the heir apparent to past fan-favorite Harry Potter games, but the aforementioned development issues created some concern that Avalanche Software may not be up to the challenge of bringing the Wizarding World to life. But “enemies of the heir…beware,” as Hogwarts Legacy is officially the highest rated Wizarding World of Harry Potter game of all-time, according to Metacritic. The closest competition is LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, which earned a respectable 79 Metascore on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, but still trails far behind the latest entry in the Potterverse. Based on early critic reviews, it appears that Hogwarts Legacy has successfully recaptured the magic of Harry Potter, bringing the Wizarding World to life for a new generation of fans.
