Smarter cops, bigger maps, and NPCs with a short fuse. Leonida is getting complicated.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar’s most detailed open-world game yet. A new Edge magazine preview has revealed more about Leonida, including its enormous map, highly reactive NPCs, dynamic weather, and systems that can change how players approach crime.

Written by Simon Parkin, the 16-page feature follows a 90-minute gameplay demonstration at Rockstar North, where co-studio head Rob Nelson played through the game on a PlayStation 5.

Leonida Is Going To Be Massive

One of the biggest revelations is the size of Leonida, the city where Jason and Lucia’s story takes place. According to Rockstar, the map is twice the size of GTA V, with a total landmass close to the combined areas of GTA IV, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The map will also have a lot more interiors than previous games. There are a lot more buildings you can go into. These buildings will have personal belongings and other little details that help tell the story of the occupants and the overall game.

On top of that, the city has fully functioning bus and railway systems that run on a schedule.

GTA 6 Has 600,000 NPC Animations

NPCs are also going to look more lively, as Rockstar has reportedly created around 600,000 animations for them. However, the studio isn’t relying on animations alone to make pedestrians feel more realistic. NPCs will have individual personality traits that influence their temperament, aggression, and reactions to the player’s behavior.

During the demonstration, Nelson had Jason stare at a man walking his dog. The pedestrian eventually confronted Jason and unleashed his dog, forcing Nelson to run away. In another moment, Jason took a shotgun from an unattended police vehicle and casually continued walking.

These encounters demonstrate how seemingly minor interactions can develop into unpredictable situations. NPCs can also react differently depending on whether Jason carries a shotgun in his hands or slings it over his back. In short, NPCs are going to be more than just civilians you can steal cars or cash from. They will even help the cops out during robberies.

During carjackings, NPCs can surrender or fight back with weapons. Carjacking itself has more purpose than just transport, as you can access an app that has vehicles wanted by criminal buyers. If you see a flashy car, you can steal it and make money off it.

NPCs might also challenge you to street races. Speaking of races, every car now has a fuel gauge and engine health, making driving around more immersive.

Dynamic Weather and a More Reactive World

Leonida isn’t just going to be big; it’s also going to have one of the most detailed weather systems ever in a Rockstar Game. Unlike GTA V’s more straightforward weather conditions, GTA 6 will feature cloud systems influenced by wind, humidity, fog, time of day, and seasons.

You’d be able to spot storms forming in the distance and watch as rain reaches their locations.

Weather is another area receiving a substantial overhaul. Unlike GTA V’s more straightforward weather conditions, GTA 6 will feature cloud systems influenced by wind, humidity, fog, time of day, and seasons. Roads become wet, buildings continue dripping after rainfall, and different surfaces dry at different rates. Pedestrians will also react to different weather conditions. Wind will affect waves and boats. The weather system is going to affect parts of the game beyond just being there for aesthetic purposes.

Rockstar is also introducing a Criminal Profile system that tracks Jason and Lucia’s behavior, ranging from Professional to Irredeemable. Players can intimidate or incapacitate enemies instead of killing them, and their choices will influence how the story unfolds. It sounds similar to the Honor system from Red Dead Redemption 2.

The protagonists’ relationship will also evolve based on player decisions. Their closeness is measured on a four-point scale, with activities such as walking, cycling, working out, and driving together helping strengthen their bond.

Crime System Is Going To Be Deeper Than Ever

The Wanted system is one of the most beloved features of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and Rockstar is making it even better.

The Police will now track your appearance, including clothes and weapons. They will also watch CCTV footage and even check whether you had a partner or not. On top of that, they have more tools in their arsenal to stop you, like spike strips and K9 units.

Overall, GTA 6 is going to be one of the biggest open-world releases of this year. The amount of detail in every system, from NPCs to the police, is going to make Leonida feel like an actual city rather than just a map.

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With Rockstar now showing extended gameplay to the press, players are getting a clearer picture of the systems behind one of the year’s most anticipated releases.
