Grinding Gear Games Announces Changes Coming to Path of Exile 1’s Curse of the Allflame League Amid Player Struggles
Another poverty league?
Grinding Gear Games has outlined a massive wave of improvements coming to Path of Exile 1: Curse of the Allflame following the league’s launch over the weekend. While the expansion brought plenty of players back, peaking around 190,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, it also came with several balance concerns, unrewarding mechanics, and bugs that quickly became common topics within the community.
In a new development update, Grinding Gear Games acknowledged the feedback and confirmed that several hotfixes and balance adjustments are already in the works, with more changes expected in the coming days.
Charts and Voyages Are Becoming More Rewarding
One of the biggest complaints surrounding Curse of the Allflame centered on its new Charts and Voyages mechanic, with players feeling the rewards weren’t worth the time invested.
As an example, popular streamer Empyriangaming shares his thoughts along with his friends during their group play.
To those who aren’t familiar with Empyriangaming, they always start the league playing and progressing as a full party, basically speedrunning straight to the endgame. If they struggle with the new league mechanic for loot or currency, you can imagine how hard it is for the other players to make it worth their time.
Grinding Gear Games is addressing that with several significant buffs.
Players will no longer need to collect Vesper upgrade pieces to unlock Diviner, Arcanist, and Operative Strongboxes in higher-level Charts and Voyages, as these will now spawn by default in areas above level 67.
The studio is also reducing the frequency of low-value objectives cluttering the Allflame Lantern system. Crab nests and other less rewarding objects will appear less often, while valuable rewards like Currency, Scarab, Stacked Deck, and Map chests will become significantly more common.
Golden Lanterns will also receive a notable buff by increasing the item quantity dropped by slain monsters. At the same time, Chart modifiers granting Quantity and Rarity will receive a 20% to 40% increase, making completed runs considerably more rewarding.
Several quality-of-life improvements are also on the way, including:
- Directly launching Charts from the Bathysphere without speaking to Valerie.
- Viewing your current Voyage board while progressing through a Voyage.
- Earlier access to Ducat crafting by reducing the unlock requirement from five Vesper upgrades to three.
- Additional currencies, including Ancient Orbs and Orbs of Chance, becoming compatible with Allflame crafting.
- Better automatic Allflame Lantern placement to prevent encounters from spawning in awkward terrain.
Grinding Gear Games also revealed a new loot chest called Sunken Opulence, which will arrive in the next restart patch since it can’t be deployed through a standard hotfix.
Abyss and Mercenaries Are Receiving Major Balance Passes
Another mechanic receiving attention is Abyss, which the developers admitted didn’t provide enough rewards while also falling short in combat density. The team confirmed that significant improvements will roll out over the next few days.
The newly introduced Luminary Ascendancy and permanent Mercenary system are also getting several buffs after players reported that Mercenaries struggled to remain effective, especially in higher-tier maps.
The Luminary Ascendancy has been a hot topic early, as its progression throughout the campaign and early mapping stages was lackluster. Zizaran, a well-known hardcore SSF player, ran Luminary for his leaguestart and here were his honest thoughts about the new ascendancy.
To improve progression, permanent Mercenaries will no longer suffer damage penalties before level 45, with the scaling penalty gradually increasing until level 83 instead of applying heavily throughout the game.
Attack-focused Mercenaries are also receiving endgame damage improvements, while Infamous Mercenaries will appear more frequently to help players recruit stronger companions.
Additional changes include:
- Mercenaries spawning with more support gems in Maps.
- A new Atlas Passive notable that boosts allied Mercenary damage against Mercenaries and Rogue Exiles.
- Ongoing investigation into allowing Mercenaries to be revived more easily after dying during Maps.
These updates should make the new Ascendancy feel much stronger without requiring excessive investment early on.
Several Bugs Are Still Under Investigation
Beyond balance changes, Grinding Gear Games is also working through numerous bugs reported since launch.
Some of the highest-priority issues include Deadlock crashes, Caster Mastery failing to grant buffs from league mechanic chests, Allflame guidance arrows pointing toward already-opened chests, inconsistent Chart storage behavior, Mana Infused Staff not interacting correctly with Ignite, Mercenary minimap icons failing to disappear, and Legion encounters ending before every tagged reward becomes available.
The developer noted that this is only a portion of the known issues, with additional fixes continuing alongside ongoing balance adjustments.
Grinding Gear Games says it will continue monitoring community feedback and release hotfixes as soon as they’re ready, thanking players for their bug reports, gameplay videos, and patience as Path of Exile 1: Curse of the Allflame continues to evolve after launch. I’m sure it has to come soon, as players are slowly losing momentum and even calling this a “poverty league,” similar to the woes from other painful leagues like Lake of Kalandra.
