Stainless Games’ port of the much-loved classic Carmageddon has arrived in the Apple Store and is completely free to download for one day only.
Carmageddon, mild in comparison to the ultra-realistic neck-stabby bloodbaths we’re used to these days, caused a huge amount of controversy upon its first release. The game was censored in Germany and the UK (though only for 8 months in the latter) whose versions featured zombies with green blood or robots with black oil instead of the original human pedestrians. It was outright banned in a few countries and while I’ve said it’s relatively mild, don’t be downloading it if you’re too young or easily offended by cartoon blood (it’s rated 12+).
If you’re unfamiliar with the title, the 1997 classic holds a special place in gaming history due to being one of the first 3D sandbox driving games. Carmageddon was also one of the earliest to make a big deal of the now rather common staple of running people over for in-game rewards. There was racing involved but the freedom of the open-world was a major talking point for gamers at the time.
Over the years Carmageddon has been ported from DOS to Windows, Mac OS, PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. Stainless Games has now brought the game to iOS and should have the Android version ready by December.
Stainless Games recently regained the right to use the Carmageddon trademark and is in the midst of reboot of the series after finding funding off the back of a Kickstarter campaign. The game that kicks the series’ reboot off is named Carmageddon: ReincarnationThe one-day Carmageddon Pocket Size giveaway is meant a thank you from the team to all their Kickstarter pledgers.
The iOS edition of Carmageddon is playable on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. It requires iOS 5.1 or later.
