We’ve got our first look at The Lord of the Rings: Gollum thanks to a nice little screenshot dump made by the studio. When we first learned of the Gollum-centric game, it was a simple teaser with just a logo, nothing more. Now we are getting a chance to see what the new take on The Lord of the Rings will have to offer because a couple of new screenshots have been revealed.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is being created by Daedric Entertainment and while it’s not a trailer or a ton of new screens, it does give us a look at the overall tone the game is going for. We’ve seen Gollum and his two personalities at war with each other both in the novels and in the feature films and now a new game will explore, in detail, what goes behind the troubled hazy eyes.

The above screenshot shows the ability to respond in certain situations in the same vein of those two versions of himself. In the above dialogue options available, it’s clear that Daedric is keeping true to this character’s capabilities. He’s not a tank, he’s certainly not a seasoned rogue – he’s just not a fighter. He’s a trickster dripping in paranoia and fear and those character traits known from the movies and books is very evident in one of the screenshots that the studio chose to reveal.

While the newly revealed Lord of the Rings: Gollum gives fans a small taste of what’s to come and how this game will pay a widely beloved franchise justice, the three screens don’t reveal a whole lot else. The aesthetic is something one would expect from a Lord of the Rings-inspired adventure but it’s clear that this was meant to be a simple tease.

With the new Geoff Keighley Summer games event meant to replace E3 this year with a stretched out time period of new reveals and first looks, it’s possible that the studio dropped these new Lord of the Rings: Gollum screenshots in prep for an official trailer reveal during then, though Daedric has been very hush hush regarding their plans for this particular journey.

It will be interesting to see what direction they take this character. Though not a hero, Gollum has been a key point of interest in this franchise for a very long time. His duality, viciousness and vulnerability all wrapped into one tiny package has been intriguing to watch through the years. To play a game with him as the sole focus? This could be an incredible opportunity to truly dive deep into this character’s motivations and mental torment.

We don’t have a release date for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum at this time, though we do know that it is slated for a next-gen launch in 2021 for the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC. In the meantime, at least we have something to feast our eyes on before we get an official trailer.

Check out what else is going on in the game-verse with some of our other games coverage from the past week:
