Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo Confirms a Major Change from the Original Story

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo just let the cat out of the bag regarding the original story and changes made.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just that: a remake. That means changes, improvements, and even more story to enjoy now that we know it’s in two parts. That being said, a lot of the bigger changes have been kept hush hush but it looks like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo just spilled the beans on one of the key changes made to the adventures of Cloud.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo leaked early and it showed off Square’s new take on the Shinra Mako Reactor explosion. For those that played the original, the Avalanche terrorist organization blew up the Mako Reactor with a bomb that killed innocents in an attempt to send a message to Shinra. So what’s different with the remake? Who planted the bomb in the first place.

The leaked footage shows that it wasn’t Avalanche that planted the bomb, but that it was Shinra itself. The demo shows Avalanche planting their own bomb, a much smaller one with a controlled blast, that doesn’t destroy the Mako Reactor. With the remake, Shinra’s president sees the explosion and makes the executive decision to order a much larger one in order to frame the eco-focused terrorist group. Classic bait and switch.

While the original Final Fantasy 7 game was incredible and the remake looks just as impressive, it is an interesting twist to throw in there given that Avalanche’s “the ends justify the means” philosophy is a major talking point in the game’s story. With it now leaning even further into the corporate corruption angle, it will be interesting to see how this swap will impact the rest of the story.

If you’re interested in seeing the footage, with spoilers, you can check out the video below. As for the game itself, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake makes its official debut on March 3, 2020, exclusively to the PlayStation 4. For even more about the game:

“The first entry in a multi-part saga, delivering a level of depth inconceivable for the original. Mind-blowing story, unforgettable characters, epic battles and technical excellence collide. The world has fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet’s very life force as mako energy. In the sprawling city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling themselves Avalanche have stepped up their resistance. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the group, unaware of the epic consequences that await him.”
